PRINCIPAL
Welcome to another exciting year at Centenary SHS! It’s wonderful to see our students return, full of enthusiasm and ready to take on new challenges. To all of our new families, we extend a warm welcome – we are so glad you’ve chosen Centenary SHS to be part of your educational journey. To our returning families, thank you for your ongoing support; it is with your involvement and commitment that we continue to flourish as a school community.
The beginning of the year is always a time of renewal and reflection. Our staff have worked hard to ensure that our facilities, resources, and teaching methods are ready to provide the best possible learning experiences for your students. We are excited about the possibilities that 2025 holds, and we look forward to working alongside you to make this year a successful one for all students.
Our moral purpose at Centenary SHS is: To foster positive relationships so that all learners can flourish and feel a strong sense of belonging. I see staff and students working on those relationships everyday to ensure we are flourishing as a learning community. It is critical to me that we are working as a team with parents to ensure students get the best outcomes.
One of the highlights this year is our upcoming School Review. This review is an important opportunity for our community to be heard, and for us to reflect on the progress we've made and the direction we are heading. The review team will assess our school’s strengths and identify areas for improvement, and it’s vital that our parents, carers, students, and staff are engaged in this process. This will not only help us make informed decisions but also ensure that our collective vision for the future of Centenary SHS is clear and aligned with the needs of our students and families.
As always, I encourage you to stay connected with us. Whether through our newsletters, website, or social media platforms, we will be sharing important updates and celebrating the successes of our students and school community.
Once again, welcome to the new school year. Let’s work together to make 2025 a year of growth, learning, and achievement for all of our students. I look forward to seeing our school community flourishing together.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

The evolution of our Wellbeing Framework
As a proud positive education school, Centenary SHS is delighted to inform our community that we have launched Version 2 of the Wellbeing Framework. This aligns very strongly with our school’s moral purpose: To foster positive relationships that that all learners can flourish and feel a strong sense of belonging.
One year ago, we launched the first version of the Wellbeing Framework and in Term 4 2024, we undertook a rigorous review with all key stakeholders in our community: staff, students and parents/carers to gain feedback.
As a result of this process, Version 2 has been created to better serve the needs of our community. We expect this framework to further grow and evolve our positive education approach at Centenary SHS.

Since inception in 2023, the purpose of the framework is:
- To help uphold our Moral Purpose
- To create a document that places wellbeing at the forefront of learning for students, staff, parents/carers and the wider community
- For our community to be ‘on the same page’ which how we see wellbeing
- To create a shared, strengths-based language and set of values that help us to become learners who flourish
Please refer to our school website to view the Wellbeing Framework v2:
In addition to the revised document and short video clips outlining the why’ and ‘how’ of wellbeing at Centenary SHS, we have created 3 x infographic posters that capture the essence of the Wellbeing Framework in a more visually appealing and accessible way. Attached to this newsletter are the 3 x infographics:
- Wellbeing Vision
- Domains of Wellbeing
- Key Stakeholders of Wellbeing
We hope you engage with Version 2 of our Wellbeing Framework and it helps you better understand Positive Education and wellbeing at Centenary SHS.
Please contact Matt Smith (Deputy Principal – Positive Education) or Melissa Chamberlain (Head of Positive Education) if you have any questions or would like to learn more about the ‘why’, ‘how’ and ‘what’ of wellbeing at our school.

NAPLAN – Years 7 and 9
Students in Years 7 and 9 will undertake NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) testing in Term 1 this year.
The tests will occur between Wednesday March 12th and Monday March 17th, with a subsequent catch-up period for students who missed their tests. Parents/carers will be emailed a schedule closer to the date. The school has already been working to prepare our students for these on-line tests, by installing the NAPLAN lock-down browser on students’ devices.
The following link provides more detailed information about NAPLAN: https://www.nap.edu.au/resources.
For any questions regarding the Years 7 and 9 tests, or regarding adjustments, please contact Emma Pearce (Administration Officer – Inclusion): epear95@eq.edu.au.
Student safety at the Yallambee Street bus stop
At Centenary SHS, the safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. This duty of care also extends directly after school when our students are exiting the school grounds either on foot, by bus or in a family vehicle.
We are aware that the car park on Yallambee Street can become very busy and congested after school with student/parent vehicles and council/private bus services. It is very important that we keep this precinct safe for our students. Between 3:15pm and 3:30pm, 8 different bus services are arriving in the bus bays to pick up our students. This is a very high volume of traffic in a short time-frame so it is important that buses are able to enter this space without being impeded. There have been occasions when buses are unable to enter the bus bay due to parents/carers stopping their vehicle for student pick up in the entry area of the car park.
To assist in easing congestion and ensuring student safety, please note the following expectations:
- Be courteous and only park your car in the designated parking areas where your student/s can safely enter your vehicle.
- Be vigilant when reversing out of the car parks and be particularly mindful of other vehicles also reversing from the opposite side.
- Be calm, patient and respectful when entering this space, particularly during the peak time of 3:00pm – 3:30pm.
Thank you for your cooperation and partnership in helping to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students during this time.
Sun Safety at Centenary SHS
Sun safety is an important area of wellbeing for everyone in our community. Collectively EQ guidelines, the Centenary SHS Sun Smart Policy and our Positive Education approach through the PERMAH element of ‘Health’ remind us of the importance of committing to sun safety at our school.
As our school is committed to sun safety practices, we would like to embark on a re-education campaign to ensure our students are being sun safe in order to develop important life-long, healthy habits. We have commenced this process by communicating with our students via Student Notices and Year Level Assemblies.
We are seeking the support of parents and carers in ensuring their student has a hat that they can wear during break times when they are outside. We share our recent message with students (below) so parents and carers can also partner with the school to ensure sun safety practices for our students.
Student Notice message:
Our school is committed to sun safety practices and aims to educate our students about being sun safe in order to develop important life-long, healthy habits.
We would like to draw your attention to key aspects of the school’s Sun Safety Policy:
- Students are required to wear appropriate hats when outdoors.
- Students who do not have hats must move to the shade or an area protected from the sun.
Over the next few weeks re-education about sun safety expectations will occur. This will commence with important messages conveyed during Year Level Assemblies.
Please follow our Sun Safety Policy and teacher directions during break times and consider this an investment in your current and future health and wellbeing.
Year 12
2024 Student Success
Congratulations to our Senior Cohort of 2024 on their outstanding end of year achievements:
- Three (3) students received an ATAR of 98 or above
- 29% received ATAR > 90 (of those students who shared their results)
- Four (4) students received Academic Commendations (receiving ‘A’ result in six subjects)
- 100% of students received a QCE
- 98% students received a VET qualification of Certificate II or above
One (1) Centenary SHS student received the top subject based result in the state. Congratulations to Eli on receiving the highest state-wide result for Film, Television and New Media (100 out of 100).
Compulsory Participation Phase and Student Responsibilities
Senior Schooling is an exciting time for our senior students and an important step in preparing for their future. Our students can choose what to study from a wide range of subjects and courses that count towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
Once students enter Year 11, they have entered the Compulsory Participation Phase of Learning. If students have chosen to remain at Centenary SHS as their eligible option, they are responsible for meeting ongoing enrolment obligations, including maintaining attendance, submitting all assessment and following our school’s policies and non-negotiables.
Parent Nights
Many thanks to our Years 10, 11 and 12 parents who attended last week’s Information evenings. We hope these nights were helpful in setting the expectations for senior students in their Compulsory Participation Phase of Learning, including student responsibilities toward assessment, attendance and following school processes. Slides have been emailed to parents/carers.
Student Academic Engagement – Atomi
Critical to student QCE and ATAR success is regular study and revision. Our school has invested in Atomi, a student learning and External Exam preparation tool. Atomi content mirrors QCAA syllabus content, through engaging and interactive videos, quizzes and exam preparation content.
All students have access to Atomi courses, including those studying Essential Mathematics and Essential English.
Student Vehicles
Those students wishing to drive their vehicle to school must register this with the school administration. All student cars to the parked in the bottom of school car park (Yallambee Street carpark), not the side streets. All student passengers must have lodged written permission from parents/carers and administration.
Flexible Learning
Our Years 10 – 12 students have been provided the option to undertake flexible learning on Wednesday afternoon during Lesson 4. As a privilege, students are expected to remain in Good Standing, complete the QCAA’s Academic Integrity course and return the consent available from QParents. Those students who have not met this will be timetabled into a class on Wednesday during Lesson 4.
Furthermore, those Year 12 students undertaking a study lesson (FPP) during Lesson 1 or Lesson 4 are eligible to ‘flex-off’ during this time. Please see the letter emailed home to parents/carers for further information.

Our goal is to make your experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible. If you ever need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out – we’re here for you!

Our payment plan option allows families to spread out the cost of school fees into smaller, manageable amounts, automatically deducted from your nominated account. This helps ease financial pressure and allows for smoother budgeting throughout the year.
Additional Benefits of a Payment Plan
✅ Plan ahead – Factor in future fees and reduce financial surprises.
✅ Flexibility – Payments are spread out, making them more manageable.
✅ Convenience – Automatic deductions mean no need to remember due dates.
✅ Avoid large lump-sum payments – Reduces financial strain.
To start a payment plan, please email accounts@centenaryshs.eq.edu.au.
Statement and Credit Updates
- Statements will be sent out on the 15th of each month.
- Ten days after statements are issued, any credits on student accounts will be applied to outstanding invoices (starting with the oldest).
- If you do not want your credits applied to outstanding fees, please let us know as soon as possible.

Student Resource Scheme – Supporting Student Learning
To prioritise student learning, we encourage families to contribute to the Student Resource Scheme (SRS) fees. While participation is optional, these contributions play a crucial role in providing essential resources that enhance the educational experience for the student. These fees contribute to:
✅ Digital learning resources – A wide range of software, applications, online programs, and electronic research platforms that replace traditional textbooks. These digital tools provide interactive and up-to-date content, supporting students in subjects such as Mathematics, Science, English, and Humanities. They also help enhance research skills, access to educational databases, and interactive learning experiences.
✅ Classroom consumables and stationery – Essential materials that support student learning across various subjects, including exercise books, pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, glue sticks, and rulers. This also includes subject-specific materials such as graph paper, art supplies, and practical experiment materials used in Science, Art, and Technology subjects. Additionally, creative and presentation materials such as butchers' paper, poster paper, coloured card, and visual display materials ensure students can effectively showcase their learning.
✅ School resources – Items that help organise and support daily learning. This includes the first-issued phone pouch, ensuring students remain focused during class, and the student diary, a vital tool for tracking homework, assessments, communication and important school dates.
✅ Printing & reference materials – A variety of printed student workbooks, subject-specific handouts, and additional learning resources that support classroom activities. These materials help reinforce key concepts and provide students with structured learning aids for ongoing study and reference.
SRS Updates for 2025
- In alignment with current Department of Education practices, the early bird discount has been removed to ensure a fair and equitable approach for all families
- The SRS fee has been reduced by $10 in response to cost-of-living increases.
We continuously review the Student Resource Scheme (SRS) to ensure students have the essential materials and consumables needed to enhance their learning and engagement while also providing the best possible value for families.
Student Lockers
We have updated our locker process to ensure a smoother experience for students.
Key Changes:
- Students must bring their own lock; the school will no longer provide them.
- A spare key must be given to the school for emergencies.
- Combination locks are available for purchase at the Administration Building.
Locker Allocation:
- Years 8 – 12: Students request a locker at the Administration Building, select a locker, complete a request form, and provide a spare key.
- Year 7: Lockers are allocated by the Head of Junior School near their home room. Students complete a request form and provide a spare key.
At the end of the year, all students must remove their lock and clear their locker. For further details please email admin@centenaryshs.eq.edu.au.

- Thursday (Competitive)
Students can collect a permission form from the Resource Centre.
QATSIF
Congratulations to our First Nations students Sienna, India and Seth who have successfully obtained QATSIF scholarships for their senior years of schooling.
The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) is a charitable trust organisation first established in 2008. QATSIF recognises that successful completion of schooling builds a foundation for employment and a better quality of life for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. QATSIF offers scholarships through all Queensland secondary schools to help to support Years 11 and 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with their senior studies.
Under the Scholarship Program, QATSIF provides two-year scholarship funding to support students commencing in Year 11. QATSIF funds successful schools which then provide scholarships to individual students. The intention of the funding is to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander student retention in Years 11 and 12 rather than simply sustain existing retention rates, and funding has to be used to complement and build on existing school and community programmes and support for individual students.
Other key facts regarding QATSIF:
- The QATSIF Scholarship Programs first intake of students commenced in 2010.
- In 2026, QATSIF launched its 16th round of scholarships.
- QATSIF currently supports around 4300 Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Years 11 and 12 students with their QCE, IB, QCIA (for students with a verified disability) and VET studies (for students in Alternate Education and Flexi Schools).
- To date, the number of Queensland secondary schools involved in QATSIF stands at over 400.
- These schools have administered scholarships to over 21,300 students.
- Around 9% of all Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population have received a QATSIF Scholarship.
Well-done Sienna, India and Seth.

Northern District Sports Director Report
Centenary SHS has developed a reputation over many years for being one of the most successful sporting schools in the region. Built over many years of hard work and dedication, 2024 was our most prolific year ever with over 120 Northern Eagles representatives, 34 Met West representatives and 6 QLD representatives across a variety of sports. Furthermore, we were crowned West Brisbane Sporting Association Champions for the 5th straight year. As a school, we’re looking to continue to build on the successes of 2024 as we provide many sporting opportunities for our students to flourish. My name is Lachie Gibbs, and I will be the Metropolitan (Representative) Sports Director. In 2025, James Garrard will continue in his role as WBSA Sports Director so please direct any questions or concerns to him regarding Gala Day Sport and Metropolitan finals. I will be taking over from Mr Galloway as the Metropolitan Schools Sports Director, looking after this pathway that encompasses Northern Eagles District and Met West sport.
Student Spotlight – Northern Eagles
We have also had a fast start to the year with many Northern District trials being held over the first few weeks of term. As of the time of sending in this article in to print, Centenary SHS has had 25 students selected to represent Northern Districts at regional carnivals. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to represent Northern Eagles District in their respective sports so far:

Sporting Pathways at Centenary SHS
There are many opportunities for students to become involved in sport here at Centenary SHS. They are:
- School Carnivals – Centenary SHS runs Swimming, Cross Country/Colour Run and Athletics Carnivals annually. During these carnivals, all students can compete for their houses with the points going toward the Champion House Shield and they can compete to become Age Champion and to gain selection to the district carnivals. To participate in the school carnivals, students will need to nominate and act on information provided to them by the HPE Department and HG teachers prior to each carnival.
- District and Regional Trials (Sports Director – Mr Gibbs) – Cluster Days provide students with the opportunity to gain selection in District, Regional, State, and even National Teams in a wide range of sports. The first step in this process is trialling for the Northern District Team. Students will be invited to nominate for a trial and will now need to go through a selection process at Centenary SHS as we are only allowed send a limited number of students to the Northern District Trials. The trials for Northern District tend to be after school. If successful, they then go to Regional Trials where they trial for selection in a Met West Regional team. If selected in the Regional team, they can go onto State and National Trials. All common sports are catered for in this pathway, however the age groups are (usually) Opens (16 – 19 years), 13 – 15 years and 10 – 12 years. For upcoming trial dates, students must listen to the daily notices, contact the Sport Director to trial first at school and if successful will be emailed the paperwork in order to attend the Northern District Trial.
- Specific Sports Squads – Throughout the year there will be a number of sports that the school enters competitions for. These include: SEQ Futsal, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Schools Cup Volleyball, SS Netball League, All Schools Touch Football and Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. For students to get into these squads, they need to act on information given by the Sports Director and by coaches. Trials will be required for these teams. If selected in these squads, students usually compete outside of school time and there is usually a cost involved.
- Inter-School Sport (Sports Director – Mr Garrard)
Centenary SHS will continue to participate in the West Brisbane Secondary Schools Sports Association this year. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 can compete in their Gala Days in Terms 2 and 3 and students in Years 7, 8 and 9 compete in a Gala Days in Terms 1, 2 and 3.
There are a multitude of sports available such as Touch Football, Volleyball, Ultimate Disc, Cricket, Basketball, Netball, Soccer, Pickle Ball, Badminton and AFL. Students from all year levels will have the opportunity to be part of one of these sporting teams. Teams will compete for the title of District Premiers in each sport. The premier teams, in selected sports, will progress to the Metropolitan Finals series against other schools from across Brisbane.
At Centenary SHS, we are committed to developing strong teams to compete in this competition. Sign-ons and trials for the teams will be conducted each term and training will commence on a weekly basis thereafter. Students who are selected into a Centenary SHS team are expected to commit to the team and attend all training sessions.
The purpose of this competition is to provide quality sporting games between schools and a wide range of sporting options for students. I encourage students to embrace this exciting opportunity and to try out for a team this year. If you would like further information about any of these, please contact me (Lachie) at school.
District Swimming Trials

POSITIVE EDUCATION
Welcome to all new and returning families to Centenary SHS! It has been so pleasing to see our new Year 7 cohort transition to high school and witness new relationships develop. This has also been evident with our new students in Years 8 through to 12. With relationships as our key focus for Term 1, our teaching staff have been engaging students in a variety of fun and interactive activities designed to foster connection and create a positive classroom environment. When students feel seen, heard, and valued, they are more open to learning and growth. As Dr. James Comer famously said, "No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship." By prioritising these connections, we are setting the stage for a successful year of engagement, wellbeing, and academic achievement.
Through our Positive Education approach at Centenary SHS, we place a key focus on the 24 Character Strengths and ways in which students can use their top strengths each and every day. Character Strengths are the positive human qualities that serve as pathways for living a good life. Our Signature Strengths (or top strengths) are:
- essential for us to get through the day
- easy for us to use
- energising – by keeping us uplifted and in the mood
Priority here at Centenary SHS will be helping students to consider when, how, and why certain strengths are appropriate and useful in different situations (Biswas-Diener et al., 2010). Franklin D. Roosevelt stated that “We cannot always build the future for our young people, but we can build our young people for the future” (Norrish, 2015). Helping our students identify their signature strengths and use them in their everyday lives may provide a route toward a psychologically fulfilling life. Students will be completing the VIA Character Strengths Survey during their HG extended lesson (VIA Survey). Please refer to the student diary, where individual strengths will be recorded. This not only provides students with an understanding of their own signature strengths, but also tips on how they can spot strengths in others.
In this edition, I share with you 4 Character Strengths students can draw upon to make a great start to the school year – Kindness, Love of Learning, Self-Control and Social Intelligence. Use the infographic to familiarise yourself with the meaning of these strengths and ways to encourage your young person to use these every day. I encourage parents/carers to predict their signature strengths before taking the survey. Were the results surprising, affirming or interesting? Looking forward to sharing more about Positive Education in future editions.

We welcome a new staff member Mr Sam Duffy this year, who joins us to teach Media/Film, Television and New Media. Mr Hanby, Ms Lodder and Ms McLeod are on leave and we look forward to them returning later in the year.
Student Success
Our 2024 Arts students certainly attained some amazing results and we are very proud of all of their achievements. One of our amazing students, Eli, achieved the highest result in the state, the perfect subject score of 100/100 for Film, Television and New Media! This is the fourth year in a row the Arts Faculty has celebrated a perfect 100 result!

In addition to this, we had a number of students achieve 25/25 on their external exams – another amazing achievement! The standard of teaching and learning in the Arts Faculty is very high, with exceptional teachers, and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication to student outcomes. We can’t wait to see what our 2025 Year 12 students achieve!
We had the pleasure of formally introducing and inducting the 2025 Arts Captains at the recent Investiture Ceremony. At the end of 2024, we had a record number of quality applications for the role of Arts Captain, and could have selected any of the students – it was a difficult decision for the panel of staff to make. The final eight are an outstanding group of young people, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve, showcasing and celebrating The Arts in 2025.
The Year 12 Arts Captains for 2025 are:
Ava, Niamh, Jada, Charlie, Hayden, Chloe, Portia and Elsie.

Excellence program students in Music Plus have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification in Theory of Music with the Australian Music Examinations Board as part of their studies. At the end of 2024, these awesome students completed their exam and received their certificates at assembly. To achieve this qualification, students must achieve a minimum of 65/100 – many of our students achieved High Distinctions (95+), and a special mention to Rachel for her 100% achievement! Congratulations musicians!

Congratulations to Visual Art Alumni students Riley (2022) and Pranavi (2024)! They have been shortlisted for The Noble Hawk Illustration Prize Finalist. Centenary SHS has a great track record with this competition, with two students (Riley - yes, the same Riley! - and Damian) having their illustrations published in 2022!
Extra-Curricular News
We have finalised the auditions for our Centenary SHS Dance Troupes and rehearsals have commenced. We had a great turnout at auditions this year and are excited to see what will be performed! This year the Dance Troupes will be co-ordinated by Dance Teacher Mr Mitch Holmes who can be contacted via email: mholm58@eq.edu.au. The Dance Troupes will be choreographed and rehearsed by Centenary SHS staff & students in addition to our two specialist choreographers, Caitlin Rowland and Holly Lightbody. The troupes will compete at a number of competitions across the year, with the first in approximately May. Students will have received an email detailing what troupes they are in and when rehearsals are.

A number of students have completed nominations and auditions for extension opportunities already this year: Creative Generation State Schools On Stage, Creative Generation MOST, Australian Honours Ensemble Program and the State Honours Ensemble Program. We wish all of our nominating students the best of luck!
Wizard of Oz News
2025 is a school musical year and we are very excited to present The Wizard of Oz this coming September. Over 90 students have auditioned for lead or featured ensemble roles and we look forward to announcing these positions soon. Rehearsals started for the ensemble in STEP time in Week 3. After school rehearsals commence in Term 2. Please see the attached rehearsal schedule if your student is involved.
Instrumental Music News
We welcome all new families to our program as well as welcoming back our continuing families. Students continuing in the IM program will have now received an email from Ms Sleeman with information for the 2025 program. If you have not received this information, please contact me: aslee4@eq.edu.au. There are also spare copies of timetables and information sent out in the CPAC foyer – look for the red Instrumental Music table. All students should have a copy of their IM timetable in their diary, so they can remember when to attend lessons and to show their classroom teacher. Lessons commenced in Week 2, with all ensembles starting in Week 3.
I am happy to be contacted for general program information, but the first port of call for students and parents/carers, is the teacher. Instrumental Music teachers are itinerant – they travel across schools during the week, but you can find them in CPAC on the following days or contact via email. Please allow 24 – 48 hours for the teacher to respond.
Mrs Fiona Harvey | Woodwind | Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Mr Damon Lougheed | Brass | Monday AM, Friday
Mr Matthew Hoey | Strings | Monday, Tuesday
Mr Josh Johnstone | Percussion | Monday
Mr Josh Clifford | Voice & Choir | Monday PM, Wednesday
Ms Natalia Scalia | Piano | Various mornings |
Mr Josh Clifford, our wonderful choir and vocal ensemble director also teaches individual and group vocal lessons at the school. He currently has a few vacancies for vocal lessons. If you are interested, please email Mr Clifford: jclif131@eq.edu.au
Ms Scalia teaches private and small group piano lessons. Her lessons run the same way as the rest of the IM program, on a rotating timetable, so students don’t miss consecutive lessons. She currently has a waiting list and can be contacted via email nsacl0@eq.edu.au.
Our first events of 2025 are the Instrumental Music Camps. You should have received information about Camp #1 and #2 via email. Please check the email for the due dates – there is a short turnaround for the camps. The first camp involves junior students from String Ensemble, Concert Band and Junior Choir, whilst the second camp includes the senior students (String Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Stage Band and Senior Choir).
We have already had a number of wonderful school performances, thank you to the Swingers and the String Orchestra!

The Arts Faculty are lucky to be supported by a subcommittee of the P&C – a group of parents/carers who meet once per term for an hour. Our first meeting this year will be held in PA10 on Tuesday March 11th at 7:00pm. Please email HOD Arts Angela Sleeman aslee4@eq.edu.au if you would like more information or to let us know if you can attend.
Finally, please find a copy of our Instrumental Music date claimer below. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

ENGLISH
Welcome to a new year at Centenary SHS, especially to our new students in Year 7 and others who have come to us from other schools. This is a great place to be.
I want to congratulate our recently graduated Year 12 students and express my pride in their outstanding achievements and success in their chosen pathways.
The English Department staff has been putting a great deal of effort into planning and preparing for your students as we continue to refine and improve our delivery of the Australian Curriculum in Years 7 – 10. Also, we will work alongside our seniors as they move towards their External Assessment tasks. We aim to support all students in their learning and will work with your student to develop and extend their confidence and ability in both written and spoken English skills.
The English Department Assessment Calendar will soon become available on OneSchool and I encourage all parents and carers to become familiar with the due dates for assessment. In addition, English semester overviews for Years 7 to 9 will be published on each student’s class OneNote, providing an outline of the English work which will be studied this semester, along with details about assessment dates. This overview document will help your student to develop time management skills and good study habits.
One great study habit that we require of all students is the need to draft assessment responses in Teams so that teachers can provide meaningful feedback. Please refer to the relevant pages of the student diary for information about Assessment Policy, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
As a faculty, we are focusing on regular handwriting in classrooms. Research shows that students require these motor skills, and that their learning is significantly enhanced by frequent, regular and extended periods of handwriting. To that end, it is imperative that students in all year levels have an English exercise book in which to write every lesson, as well as their laptop or device.
It is important to all of us in the English Department that our students are enjoying their learning. If you have questions, concerns or your student is experiencing difficulty, please feel free to contact me or the classroom teacher, the Year Level Coordinator or a Guidance Officer. We are happy to support students and to address problems early.
I would like to welcome these new members of staff to the English Department: Russ Eacott, Jules Grant, Louise Garrioch, Conor Ensor, Gerard Hogan, Sam Duffy, Hannah Platt and Beth Kilgour.
We are looking forward to a happy, exciting and successful 2025.

SCIENCE
Welcome parents, carers and students to a new academic year at Centenary SHS. We hope you had a rejuvenating summer break and extend a warm welcome to both new and returning students to our classrooms and laboratories.
Throughout 2025, the Science Faculty is committed to providing students with another year of dynamic, hands-on learning experiences, fostering curiosity and creativity. Through experiments, field trips, and interactive technologies, students will explore real-world applications of scientific principles and discoveries.
It has been encouraging to see students already settling into their science lessons across Years 7 to 12. To support their learning, we kindly ask parents and carers to ensure students come prepared with:
- Notebook
- Writing equipment and calculator
- Laptop
- Leather shoes for laboratory lessons
- During lessons, students will be accessing a range of digital resources including textbooks, OneNote, Teams and the following learning platforms, designed to enhance engagement and understanding:
Years 7 – 10: STILE
- STILE offers engaging lessons that present scientific concepts in diverse and interactive formats. These lessons may be assigned as classwork or homework and help students apply science to real-life experiences while checking their understanding of key concepts.
Years 11 – 12: ATOMI
- ATOMI serves as a powerful revision tool for senior students, reinforcing classroom learning through engaging videos and quizzes. It has been instrumental in helping our past students achieve outstanding results in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology.
2025 STEM Captains
- We are proud to introduce our 2025 STEM Captains; Emily and Ash.

These passionate students are eager to inspire and engage their peers in STEM. Throughout the year, they will promote opportunities for students to explore and deepen their interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Thank you for your continued support in 2025. We look forward to another exciting year of exploring scientific concepts and discoveries with our learners.

Students in Focus
During the school holidays, Year 12 student Olivia travelled to the USA, where she proudly represented Australia.
In Texas, she competed at the Texas Prime Meet, where she placed fifth on vault, despite still battling jet lag after the trip was delayed by two days. The team visited Fortworth, a real cowboy country town in Texas, and watched a National Hockey League game. In Las Vegas, she had an incredible experience going backstage at Cirque du Soleil. She then wrapped up the trip in Sacramento, California, competing at the Rose Gold Classics Competition. In this competition, the Australian Team placed third and individually Olivia placed fourth on vault, fifth on bars, and fourth overall.
Congratulations to Olivia for your amazing achievements, and all the very best for your very bright future.

YEAR 11 REPORT
We hope you had a wonderful holiday break and that your student is feeling refreshed and ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of the new school year. As we welcome our Year 11 students back, we are excited to embark on another busy and productive year filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences.
This year promises to be particularly significant for Year 11, as students begin their journey towards the final stages of their secondary education. With their studies becoming increasingly demanding, it is essential for students to start the year with strong organisation and time-management skills. We encourage all students to take an active role in their academic progress, stay engaged with their teachers, and seek support when needed. A strong start is the key to success, so let’s make sure they are ready to meet the challenges head-on!
In addition to their academic work, it is equally important for students to prioritise their mental and emotional wellbeing. With the pressures of schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and the social landscape of high school, students may face stressful moments. We encourage them to take time for self-care, engage in open conversations about their feelings, and lean on the support systems available to them at school and at home. Fostering a healthy balance between academics and personal wellbeing will help ensure that they have a successful year.
On a lighter note, we’re thrilled to announce that the much-anticipated Year 11 Semi-Formal will take place in September! This event is an excellent opportunity for students to come together, celebrate their friendships, and make lasting memories as they continue to grow and develop as individuals. More details about the event will follow as the date approaches, so stay tuned for updates!
As always, we encourage students to continue building strong friendships, embrace new experiences, and have fun with their peers. The social aspect of school life is just as important as academics, and we hope to see our students supporting one another as they navigate this exciting year ahead.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing all the wonderful things this year will bring for our students.

YEAR 10 REPORT
The Year 10 cohort have had a fantastic start to the year and are settling into their new roles as Senior School students. They have been loving having some more electives in their timetables and getting to experience all of the wonderful things that come along with wearing their new white shirts. They have accessed flexible learning for the first time in Week 3, a thrilling new step in their independence. Our Year 10 Mentors have also been hard at work supporting their Year 7 Home Groups and building some wonderful relationships with our brand new students. This week, our student leaders and mentors received their badges at our annual Investiture Ceremony, their official acknowledgement as leaders in our school community.

YEAR 9 REPORT
Welcome to Year 9!
Welcome to a brand-new school year! I hope you and your families had a restful and enjoyable break. As we begin this exciting chapter, I am thrilled to see our Year 9 students step into a pivotal and meaningful stage of their educational journey.
Year 9 is a time of growth, leadership, and opportunity. As the top of the Junior School, our Year 9 students are now role models for the Year 7 and Year 8 cohorts. This is a chance for them to demonstrate maturity, kindness, and responsibility while fostering a positive school culture. Whether it’s through their behaviour in the classroom, their leadership on the sports field, or their involvement in extracurricular activities, they have the opportunity to inspire and guide their younger peers.
This year is also about preparing for the transition to the senior school. It’s a time for students to further develop their independence, refine their study habits, and set personal and academic goals. We will also have a strong focus on preparing students for the ‘real world’ and we start this by focusing on career development, goals and aspirations. Our team is committed to supporting every student as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of Year 9.
This term, our Home Group (HG) program has a strong focus on relationships. For some students, this involves getting to know their new HG teacher, while others are building upon the relationships they already have with their teacher and peers. These sessions have been designed to foster a supportive environment where students feel valued, connected, and ready to grow.
This term’s program will allow students to also strengthen their interpersonal skills, build resilience, and develop a deeper understanding of the importance of healthy relationships. These lessons align with our focus on leadership and personal growth, encouraging students to approach their school year with empathy, kindness, and a positive mindset.
I am so proud of how well our Year 9 students have started the year, and I look forward to working closely with you and your child in the months ahead. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Here’s to a fantastic 2025 filled with growth, achievement, and connection. Let’s make this year one to remember!

YEAR 8 REPORT
Welcome to a brand-new year! My name is Brooke Davis, and I’m the Acting Year 8 Coordinator for Term 1. A big part of my role is to support our Year 8 students—whether it’s helping them navigate challenges, celebrating their successes, or just being someone that they can come to for a chat.
I’d also like to introduce our Year 8 Leaders: Xavier, Desiree, Lucille, and Harrison and our Junior School First Nations Captain: Ruby. These students have been chosen to represent the Year 8 cohort, support our school community, and help lead initiatives throughout the year. I look forward to seeing what they do in their roles — watch this space!
This term in our HG program, we are focusing on relationships and Character Strengths in action. Students will explore how to build positive connections, work through challenges, and use their personal strengths to bring out the best in themselves and others. Whether it’s through group discussions, problem-solving activities, or real-life scenarios, I’m excited to see how they put their strengths into action and support one another along the way.
In just a few short weeks, the Year 8 cohort have made me feel very welcome in my new role, and for that I’m very grateful. I look forward to an exciting and rewarding term with them.

YEAR 7 REPORT
My name is Jim Joliffe and I am thrilled to introduce myself as the Year 7 Coordinator at Centenary SHS this year. As your student embarks on this exciting transition into high school, I want to assure you that their wellbeing and sense of belonging are at the heart of everything we do.
My role is to support you and your student in their academic, social, and emotional development during this important year. I work closely with teachers, support staff, and you, the parents and carers, to create a positive and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported. My aim is to ensure that all Year 7 students feel a sense of belonging and are able to thrive, make new friends, and navigate the challenges that come with starting high school. These young people are to be commended for their fantastic efforts, attitudes and overcoming the challenges that are no doubt being thrown their way so far. The HG teaching team and I are very proud and the students should be too.
I understand that this transition can be both exciting and daunting for both students and parents/carers. Please know that I am here to provide guidance, listen to concerns, and offer support whenever needed. I will also be working on developing programs and initiatives that promote mental health, resilience, and positive peer relationships, to ensure each student feels confident and part of the school community. 2025 is going to be filled with many exciting events, the biggest one being Year 7 Camp in Term 2. There will be more information regarding camp in the coming weeks. During our HG lessons, the Year 7 cohort will focus on establishing positive relationships. These skills will be explicitly taught in our HG lessons through the implementation of our PEEC Curriculum (Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum). Our Term 1 program will include the topics of; Respectful and Positive Relationships as well as identifying our signature Character Strengths. The student diary has some fantastic resources available that will allow your student to further develop these skills in and outside of the classroom.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you and your student to ensure their Year 7 experience is a successful and happy one.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Centenary State High School runs a Work Experience program for all Year 10 students in Term 2, Week 10 (Monday, June 23 – Friday, June 27, 2025). This is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore industries of interest, gain hands-on experience, and make informed decisions about their future subjects and careers.
We also see this as an opportunity to strengthen connections between our school and local businesses, fostering a supportive and engaged community. By working together, we can help students develop essential skills while also providing businesses with a chance to mentor the next generation of workers. Hosting a student not only benefits them but also allows businesses to trial potential future employees, particularly for those considering school-based apprenticeships or traineeships.
We are reaching out to see if you—or anyone you know who owns a business—would be interested in hosting a student for work experience during these dates or exploring the possibility of a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Your support can make a real difference in shaping a student’s future career path while also contributing to a stronger, more connected local community.
If you’d like more information about how the Work Experience Program works, or if you can offer a placement, apprenticeship, or traineeship, please contact our Industry Liaison Officer, Beck Morris, at rmorr311@eq.edu.au or 07 3373 4541.
Thank you for your time and support—we look forward to working together to create valuable opportunities for our students and the wider community!
