News from the Principal

Welcome Back

Welcome back from the winter vacation. I hope it has been a relaxing break for all in our community. The Parent Teacher interviews, in Week 2 of this term, presented an early opportunity for parents/carers to actively engage with the school. I trust that the dialogue in Week 2 was informative and that they enable your child to realise his or her educational goals.

The commencement of the semester sees a number of staff changes.

We welcome:

Tanya Bates who has joined the staff as a Mathematics teacher.
Cyan Taylor-Curtis who replaces Estee Lee in the DLD.
Maria Chadburn who is our new International Co-ordinator

In Guidance, Mark Voigt has taken leave and we await further details on his replacement.

School Uniform

Please ensure that your child is adhering to the school’s uniform expectations. Two areas that require attention are jumpers and socks. Students are not allowed to wear non-school jumpers to school. If a school jumper cannot be worn, students should report to the office where a small number of jumpers are available for loan. Students are to wear plain navy blue crew length socks with no logos. These socks can be purchased from the uniform shop.

Our expectation is that all students will adhere to the uniform code as described in the school’s diary and website. During the colder months a white shirt or fleece may be worn under the uniform to provide extra warmth.

In addition to non-uniform jumpers, track suit pants and beanies are not part of the uniform and should not be worn. Similarly canvas and slip on shoes do not meet the school’s uniform guidelines.

The school’s uniform code is strongly supported by the school community and contributes strongly to a disciplined learning environment.

Predictive OPs

In the first two weeks of the term all Year 11 and Year 12 OP eligible students undertook mentoring interviews with HG teachers. These interviews focused on academic progress, predictive OP ranges and post school pathways. The OP range, although predictive, should allow students to make better decisions in regards to pathway selection and tertiary applications. Importantly we operate an opt-out policy for those students who do not want access to this data at this point in time.

The reality for some students, particularly in Year 11 who are tracking at an OP 18-25, is that they need to consider the full range of course options to maximise their post school pathways.

Student Results

As a school we set a target of 60% of our students achieving an A or B on their Semester Report. The following Year Result summaries, although generally good, indicate we have further work to complete in this regard to achieve excellence. I certainly see moving the “big middle” upwards as the priority academic challenge in the school. Congratulations to our Year 8 Cohort on hitting the 60% target and our Year 12 Cohort who have shown a marked improvement from their position 12 months ago.

Year 7: 56.7%
Year 8: 60.2%
Year 9: 55.8%
Year 10: 54.8%
Year 11: 43.9%
Year 12: 57.2%

International Program

Term 3 is always a busy period for the International program. We are hosting the following study tours this term:

Yiwu Qunxing FLS from China - 15 July to 17 August
Chihaya Atasaka from Osaka, Japan - 3 August to 12 August

We also have 31 International students studying at Centenary SHS this term.

Our international program provides our domestic students with a terrific opportunity to develop international cultural understanding and an appreciation of the opportunities available in our globalised world.

Student Success

Great to see our Year 7 Debating team up and running. We look forward to their competing in the next few weeks.

Good luck to our Year 10 students participating in the QLD Brain Institute final next week.

Congratulations to our three cross country runners who recently competed in the state final held in Maryborough:

Curtis Campbell – U15
Michael Melvin – U16
Jacob Simpson – U18

And finally well done to all our participants in last week’s Athletics Day. Again another highly successful school event and congratulations to Yallambee on their victory.

News from the Deputy Principals

QParents has arrived

QParents has been launched with the Year 9 students this term. Invitations have been sent to all Year 9 parents/carers with information on how to register. Please follow the guidelines and contact the school if you have any difficulties.

The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents/carers of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents/Carers will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents/carers to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

  • Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
  • Academic report cards
  • Class timetables
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details

QParents will assist both staff and parents/carers in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way. As we develop the processes and systems to support QParents, we will roll out implementation to all other year levels. QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.

More information about QParents can be found at the QParents website. This link contains an extensive question and answer section with plenty of detailed information.

International Program at Centenary SHS

Since 2009 Centenary State High School has welcomed international students into our Graduate Program – for students who wish to graduate from our school, and into our Study Abroad program – for students who are here for up to a year to experience life in Australia.

This year we have had an increase in our numbers of international students, with 31 students now enrolled in Term 3 and engaged in learning at Centenary SHS. Most of these students live with families in our local community, although some live with relatives or family friends.

This week international students from all year levels, plus a large group of domestic students, will take part in our “Global Connections Day”, run by Y-Lead. This initiative is funded by a grant from EQI and will bring students together to focus on skill-building for teamwork and making successful transitions, something we all do throughout our lives. Through the same grant we were awarded funds to build an undercover deck at HU Block which will provide an outdoor area for international events but also serve as an interesting outdoor learning space for classes.

Centenary SHS also welcomes Study Tours from high schools in China and Japan, groups who visit us each year. Last Friday nine students and one teacher from Yiwu Qunxing Foreign Language School, China, joined us for the next five weeks for both specialised classes and integration into our classes. Our Year 9 students are doing a wonderful job as their buddies. (see photos). In a couple of weeks students and staff from Chihaya Akasaka in Japan will also join us for a brief visit.

In this busy time we would also like to farewell our International Student and Homestay Coordinator, Jane Campbell, who has worked tirelessly with our international students since the beginning of our program. We welcome Maria Chadburn to this role.

News from the Business Services Manager

Enrolment Procedure

Centenary State High School has an approved enrolment management plan. This plan clearly outlines the Centenary suburbs as the catchment area. This includes the suburbs of Jindalee, Mt Ommaney, Middle Park, Westlake, Riverhills, Sumner, Sinnamon Park and sections of Darra and Seventeen Mile Rocks. Students who reside within these suburbs have automatic enrolment eligibility. A map with the precise boundary of the catchment area can be accessed from the enrolment section of the school’s website.

http://centenaryshs.eq.edu.au

Prospective students who reside outside of the catchment may submit an Application for Enrolment Consideration Out of Catchment (available on the school’s website) to the Principal. Proof of residence will be required upon enrolment for all Applications for Enrolment Consideration Out of Catchment.

Exceptions to the local residency requirement include:

  • Enrolment in the Centenary State High School’s Diverse Learning Department which caters for students with Vision Impairment or Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Placements are coordinated by Education Queensland.
  • Other special circumstances which are outlined in the Centenary State High School’s Enrolment Management Plan, which is available on the school’s website.

Requests for enrolment should be directed to the school’s Enrolment Officer. Parents/Carers are requested to bring appropriate documentation to any interview such as recent School Reports, proof of residence and passport and visa details for overseas students.

If your student is ceasing enrolment at Centenary State High School, parents/carers are required to notify the school in writing and to complete a Departure Form. Please ensure all school resources are returned to the school and all finances completed.

YEAR 7

Year 7 students from local primary schools (Jindalee, Jamboree Heights, Middle Park, Darra, Good News Lutheran and Darra-Jindalee Catholic) are guaranteed enrolment into Centenary State High School if they live in the catchment area and they have the correct documentation (enrolment application, birth certificate or passport, proof of residential address and two current school reports/NAPLAN results). Those students attending Good News Lutheran and Darra-Jindalee Catholic who live in the catchment area will also need to attend an interview.

Students, who attend one of the above schools, but do not live in the catchment area, will need to complete an Application for Enrolment Consideration Out of Catchment. They will need to provide the correct documentation (enrolment application, birth certificate or passport, proof of residential address and two current school reports/NAPLAN results). Interviews will be required and the Principal has the final decision.

Students who do not attend one of the above schools, and do not live in the catchment area, will need to complete an Application for Enrolment Consideration Out of Catchment. They will need to provide the correct documentation (enrolment application, birth certificate or passport, proof of residential address and two current school reports/NAPLAN results). Interviews will be required and the Principal has the final decision.

YEARS 8-12

Please contact the enrolment officer by phoning the school on 3373 4555 or visiting the school office (Monday to Thursday) to discuss your application.

LOST PROPERTY

Students should check the school office for any property they believe they have lost. If property is marked with the student’s name, every effort will be made to return the property to the student as soon as possible. Parents/Carers are most welcome to visit the school and check the lost property section for items that their student may have lost.

Items of school uniform which remain unclaimed after one month will be placed in the “spare uniform” collection kept at the school for emergency situations or will be sent to the school uniform shop for sale as ‘second-hand’ uniforms. Other unclaimed items will be donated to charities.

Parents/Carers Contact Details

Parents/Carers contacts details are a very important to us. Up to date and current school records enable us to send you messages, contact you when your student is ill or if there is an issue that needs resolving.

If you are moving house, changed jobs, emails or mobile phone numbers, please inform the school office via

Late to School and Early Departures

Parents/Carers should:

  • ensure their child follows the school's recommended processes and procedures for late arrival and early departure by signing in/out at the main office
  • notify the school if their child will be late to school / departing before 3.00pm using the school's recommended communication processes. This may take the form of:
      - accompanying the child to the school office
      - phoning the school (3373 4555 during school hours)
      - providing the child with a signed and dated note

Students arriving late:

  • should report to the office and collect a “late pass”
  • where an explanation has not been provided, students will be referred to the appropriate Deputy Principal
  • will be marked present, but the absence will remain unexplained until a parent/carer contacts the office
  • failure to sign in will be regarded as truancy and consequences may be issued

Students leaving early:

  • must report to the office before their scheduled departure to collect an “intention to leave early pass“
  • where necessary, this pass will be used to leave class
  • when leaving, students must report to the main office and present their leave pass
  • they will then be issued an “Early Departure /Leave Pass“ slip
  • students returning to school must sign back in through the main office before returning to classes

Safety of Students/Staff - Drop Off/Pick Up Zones

Parents/Carers are required to use the drop off/pick up zone on Moolanda Street or utilise the car park on Yallambee Road. Parents/Carers are requested not to use the Moolanda Street staff car park for dropping off or picking up students. The congestion that is caused by parents/carers accessing this car park is a hazard to both students and staff. It is also requested that students utilise the path beside the Moolanda Street driveway to access the school grounds rather than using the driveway as this is the entry for large and heavy vehicles.

News from Education Adjustment Centre

Welcome to Semester 2. I would like to welcome Cyan Taylor-Curtis to our teaching staff this term. Cyan will be the Year 11 Case Manager and will be working closely with students completing a QCIA.

After reviewing student results for last semester it is very pleasing to see that many students have improved their results across a range of subjects, and this has seen some students moving into more difficult courses of study. Congratulations to all students on the academic success you have achieved so far this year. I would like to continue to encourage parents/carers to contact their student’s case manager if you are concerned about any aspect of school life.

This term all schools across Australia will be participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data. This data collection is to identify how schools are providing support for all students for whom a disability or medical condition may have a significant impact on their education. The data that is submitted does not identify students, rather it gives numerical information concerning levels of adjustment provided across the school. If you do not wish your child to be included in this data collection please contact the Principal.

Last term we received funding support from Jindalee Rotary club and we have used this funding to purchase a class set of devices to enable some of our classes to more fully engage in e-learning programs. This is a very exciting step forward for the DLD and it is hoped that this will have a positive impact on student engagement as well as academic progress.

Finally, preparations have begun for our PTS camp which will be held in Week 10. This camp provides the major opportunity for assessment and practice of the skills developed in PTS throughout the year and it is expected that all students studying PTS attend the camp. Students have begun planning for camp, with our seniors preparing the activities and our junior students planning meals. Information regarding camp will be to be sent to parents/carers in the coming weeks.

Food For Thought

Every day brings opportunities to experience and enjoy a productive life, but many people let their lives just slip by, accomplishing little. These are the people who often complain of boredom and disappointment with life, but they are often too lazy to take the time to investigate ways of improving their current situation.

What about you? Are you making the most of each day or are you unhappy and just wishing that things were different? If there are things in your life that you know you could change for the better, stop wishing and start considering your options.

If you need a bit of advice to help you, please understand that you are never alone. There are many wonderful organisations such as Uniting Care Community who can help you with relationship or financial advice. Here within our school community, we have Guidance Officers and other support staff, including myself who are available to you.

Don’t waste one more day. Start making the effort to live life to the full.

A message from Chappy Bernie

Some simple rules to living Happy…

How to be happy

The art of making yourself happy is something we can all learn and practice. No one is happy 100% of the time. Life has its ups and downs. Even so there are some sure fire ways to increase your happiness.

  1. Don’t wait to see if you are having a good time. Instead of going to places and seeing if it is fun decide in advance to have fun regardless of the circumstances. Enjoy the day regardless of the weather. Make the most of the occasion regardless of the company.
  2. Go outside and play. You were told to do this as a kid and I’m telling you to do it again, play more. Go for walks, throw a dog a stick, skip, sing loudly or imagine yourself to be a spy passing through enemy territory. Whatever does it for you? Make a promise to play more.
  3. Develop deep friendships. Your friends are your true wealth, Value them and see them regularly, Let them know how important they are to you. Most people only have two close friends so don’t fool yourself into believing you are less popular than most people.
  4. Increase the closeness of extended family. Keeping in close contact with your family gives you a support base for difficult times and also strengthens y our sense of where you come from. Feeling you belong in a family is a powerful way of being happy.
  5. Play to your strengths. Have a good long hard look at yourself. What are you good at? Make a commitment to develop your skills, talents and abilities as much as you can. If you don’t develop your own unique talents the world misses out.
  6. Seek out groups that most strongly value what you have to offer. Finding the niche where your abilities are valued is the basis of success.
  7. Avoid social groups where your unique attributes are not valued. Not everyone is going to like you or think you could amount to much. Get used to it. Accept that it is so, and then get out of their way.
  8. Live in the dreamtime. Find and follow your passions. Dream big dreams and make a promise to yourself to live a wonderful life.
  9. Laugh a lot more. Find people, shows, books, films and situations that make you laugh and surround yourself with them.
  10. Have something bigger than yourself to believe in. Think about the contribution you can make while you are on this planet and do it.
  11. Love as much as you can - and then love some more.

News from the School Nurse

This year twenty five blood ambassadors from Year 12 are once again holding a blood drive at the school. To maximise the number of donations, we are calling for all willing and able students sixteen years or older and staff as well.

This is a legacy project, left for us from the class of 2013 and is a way of giving back to the community and raising the profile of young people in our suburbs.

Any person over the age of sixteen has the opportunity to donate blood once a year and if you’re eighteen or over, you can do so every six months. Currently only 1 in 30 people give blood, but 1 in 3 people will need blood in their lifetime. In order to make this happen, we are once again bringing the donation van to our school car park on 31 October and 1 November.

If you are able to donate outside of the school, you can mention Centenary SHS’s name to add to our total donations that we achieve. Donating takes less than an hour and those who do can save up to three lives, just from one donation. There will be information and permission forms sent to families in Years 11 and 12 in the following weeks and we will continue to provide information closer to the dates.

In the meantime, please consider getting involved and having the discussion with your child. We look forward to seeing many brave faces rolling up their sleeves and saving lives.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact either Dy Moxham or Danielle Ringrose, Year 12 Coordinator.

Athletics

The field events carnival was a huge success with student participation at a record high. This level of participation is definitely helping with our goal of winning the District Athletics Champion Trophy. Well done to all students who participated in the field day.

West Akuna Athletics Carnival

Students that are U/12 are given an opportunity to compete at the West Akuna Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 19 July and Thursday 21 July at ANZ Stadium. Congratulations to the following students that have already qualified to compete from the field events carnival:

Alec Ingham, Mitchell Johnson, Leticia Ng, Caitlin Ng, Yusene Govender, Eli Andrews, Jade Wong. More students were selected following our school track carnival on Friday July 15.

Day 2 – Athletics Track Carnival Day – Friday July 15 (Week 1)

  • By the time you get this newsletter we will have completed our track athletics day. We expect that it will have been another successful day with lots of participation and fun.

District Athletics

Following on from our school athletics carnivals, we will be selecting the school athletics team to attend the West Brisbane District Athletics Carnivals. Students who have finished 1st or 2nd in any event, plus those who finished 1st to 4th in the 100m will be selected in the school squad. Once selected those students must then attend training on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to maintain their place in the team. The final make-up of the school team will be posted on the sports noticeboard in Week 3. Students selected in the team will be provided with information letters at that time.

The District Carnivals will be held on:

  • Field Day – Indooroopilly SHS – Tuesday August 2
  • Track Day – UQ – Friday Aug 5

We won the Champion Schools Trophy in 2015 and are aiming to defend it again this year. We therefore encourage all students who are selected in the squad to attend training and be part of our quest to win this trophy again!

Athletics training

The training program offered to students has proven to be very popular with more and more students attending. The extra training will definitely help Centenary SHS achieve our goal and it is just amazing to see so many students passionate about Athletics and striving to achieve to their full potential. Training is held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.00pm to 4.15pm.

Student Success:

Reporting Results

  • The annual sports awards will be held in Term 4. In order to ensure that students are receiving the correct awards and are not missing out, it is important that I am informed of any sporting team that a student makes. This way our records will be up to date and the awards night will run smoothly.
  • Students can see me in Staffroom 4 or results can be emailed to tnasa1@eq.edu.au.

News from English

The start of a new semester means that marking has been completed, reports sent home, and it is now an opportunity for all students to create clear, specific and manageable goals for improving their English skills. Students in every year level should think about their areas of strength and weakness, and make a decision to work on improving in those areas. If the mountain seems too big to climb, take small steps. Ask yourself: “Am I using ordinary language? Would my writing be better if I tried to use more sophisticated words?” Or perhaps: “I am not so good at reading comprehension. I need to try to think more about what I am reading.” Work on at least one specific skill, and you will soon find that you will become more confident in English and will see improved results.

Students have all received a hard copy of their semester overview, so there is no confusion about what will be studied and when things are due. Parents/Carers have been emailed these documents.

Throughout the year I receive information about writing competitions which all students are invited to enter. These posters are on the noticeboard outside Staffroom 1. If you enjoy writing and would like to send an entry to any of these competitions, just make note of the relevant website and send your entry through. Please see me if you would like help – I am always happy to be your editor before your entry is submitted. Currently there are three competitions advertised:

  • Writing for Life, closing August 9
  • Write4fun, closing August 31
  • QIEU competition, closing October 12

Coming up:

Our two Year 7 teams will soon take part in their second-round debate. While neither team was successful in Round 1, it was a valuable learning experience for the students and they enjoyed themselves immensely. I am very proud of their contribution and representation of our school. Congratulations to Ms Van Soelen for her hard work in coaching and preparing our debaters. This is just the beginning – before long Centenary SHS will be a formidable debating school.

The ICAS English competition will take place on August 2. All students in Years 8, 9 and 11 will sit the competition, as well as a number of students in the other year levels who wish to participate. Good luck to all students.

In September some of our students in the Junior school will be attending the Brisbane Writer’s festival. More information will be forthcoming about this event very soon.

Do you know this grammar rule?

Here is a simple trick to help with a common grammatical error: whether to use And I OR And me?

If the terms objective case and subject of a verb are confusing, there is a neat trick to determine whether to use the you and I form or the you and me form. Simply remove the words that come before the I or me and try your sentence again. You will naturally use the correct version.

  • The party was organised by my friend and I/me.

Question: I or me?

Step 1: Remove my friend and
Step 2: Try the sentence again.
Step 3a: The party was organised by I.
Step 3b: The party was organised by me.

Therefore:

  • The party was organised by my friend and me.
  • The party was organised by my friend and I.

Year 10 Report

Welcome back after end of semester break. I trust everyone had a relaxing and restful holiday. Currently the Year 10s are gearing up for an exciting 3 days away on camp from July 27-29. We have close to 200 students embarking on Maranatha Outdoor Education Centre in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Students will be participating in a range of challenging activities including a High Ropes Course, Possum Pull, Tower of Tremble and lots more. It will be a great time to get out of the classroom and enjoy experiencing a different learning environment. Students not attending camp will be involved in a range of valuable learning tasks revolving around career education.

Term 3 is all about SET Plan! The students have finished listening to valuable HOD talks, we have had a QTAC parent/carer night and currently our HG teachers are preparing their classes for the subject selection process. Please continue the conversations at home with your child about their pathway through the senior school.

I’m looking forward to a challenging term ahead where our year 10s can really start preparing for the senior phase of school. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Regards,
Lachie Gibbs, Year 10 Coordinator

Year 9 Report

Welcome to Semester 2 and I trust that all families had a relaxing break. A warm welcome to the new Year 9 students (and families) that have recently joined us.

RECOGNITION – Year 9s will SHINE in 2016

Congratulations to all students who received excellent results on their reports. Many of our students did exceptionally well during Semester 1 and it was extremely pleasing to see excellent results for effort and behaviour. Well done Year 9s. I was also pleased to see so many parents/carers attend the Parent Teacher evening. These are valuable meeting times to celebrate success, discuss progress and connect home and school. The Year 9s have reflected on their achievements and have set goals for Semester 2 (in their school diary) during HG class.

TERM 3 PROGRAMS

Leadership program

The High Resolves team have been selected and attended their first leadership day conducted at school by High Resolves. The program began with a workshop in which students explored the skills required to become an effective leader. Thank you to Ms Claire Law (Year 9 HG teacher) who is also working with the students. The next workshop is on August 11 where the students will begin developing a school and community action project.

Year 9 “buddies”

We have welcomed nine students from Yiwu Qunxing FLS Study Tour from China who have joined our school and are attending classes with their Year 9 “buddies”. Thank you to the Year 9 “buddies” who are making our visitors feel welcome and including them in their school life and studies. I am so proud of our Year 9s.

HG program

I have a terrific group of Year 9 Home Group (HG) teachers working together to ensure your child feels valued, safe and supported. Please don’t hesitate to contact either your HG teacher or myself if you have any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Year 8 Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Ahoy! By the time you read this, you will have received the permission slip for the annual Year 8 Pirate Day! This is the signature event for Year 8 and the key focus of the day is fun. The deeper purpose is team-building. From nervous year 7s at the beginning of last year, the Year 8 cohort has developed into a lively, but lovely group of young people. Their confidence has increased and the aim is to tap into that energy. Home Groups ‘compete’ as a ‘Pirate Team’ against others to build the pirate ship with the tallest mast. Along the way they collect “Pirate Dollars” with which they can ‘buy’ useful pieces of pirate-ship-building equipment. So…“Keep yer landlubbin eyes out fer fine pictures in an upcoming newsledder! ARRRRGH”…….

The recent parent teacher night on July 18 was busy as usual. These evenings provide curriculum teachers and parents/carers an opportunity to chat face to face. An important aspect of parent teacher nights is to establish a healthy working relationship between school and home. One of the roles of the Year 8 HG program is to acknowledge the effort and behaviour of students. Each term, students in Year 8 who have achieved an outstanding, excellent or very good result in these two aspects of life in the classroom, are presented with certificates of recognition. The criteria for Outstanding requires that both effort and behaviour are excellent (EX) across all six subjects. Students who reach this standard are indeed outstanding and we had over 30 Year 8s in this category in Semester 1. They are to be congratulated. Excellent effort and behaviour certificates are awarded to students who have achieved excellent results across five subjects and very good (VG) in the other. Very Good certificates are awarded to students who achieve EX in four out of six subjects and VG in the other two. By the time the results have been collated, there is always a very pleasing number of names highlighted on my list! The vast majority of our students do a great job in these areas, with congratulations in order to you as well. Home life plays arguably the most important role in influencing the behaviour and effort of students. Should you ever have concerns regarding the academic progress of your students, please contact their curriculum teacher or head of department (HOD).

You might remember the ANZAC mosaic from last year that a group of students created as a memorial to commemorate the 100th Year of ANZACS… Some of this group, along with our Junior School leaders were invited to attend the ANZAC Spectacular during the last week of Term 2. On display at the Convention Centre were numerous exhibits documenting the lives of the original ANZCAS during World War 1. Students came away from the experience with a deeper understanding of what soldiers and those on the home front went through. It was well worth the visit. One of our Junior School Leaders Thuwanon Chotrueng wrote:

“The Anzac experience was stunning! I was able to extend my knowledge of the ANZACs and gain a deeper understanding to why it is such a memorable event in the Australian history. …We even got to go inside a military vehicle!!!!”

Sam McKay, another Junior School leader said:

“For me, the highlight of this experience was to be able to learn about the many facets of war in quite a bit of detail. We were also able to collect other information we wanted which was also great."

Amy, Nhi, Ashleigh and Jade
at the ANZAC Display

Thanks to the Junior School leaders
Miranda, Thuwanon, Sam & Zac
who accompanied the group.

The highlight of last term is difficult to define, with so many events to choose from including the Cross Country, no less than three ANZAC events and several Interhouse Challenges (which the Year 8 student leaders planned, organised and then ran). Congratulations to Dru, Jade, Diana and Aaron and all Home Group Reps for their enthusiasm and great organisational skills.

One day that stands out is the High Resolves incursion. Students participated in three groups of 80 or so over two days in a half-day incursion around issues of Social Justice. In groups of six, students were randomly allocated a ‘country’, with some ‘countries’ subsequently experiencing several ‘injustices’ over the course of the morning. The scenarios were all designed around the inequalities and prejudices faced by many people across the globe on a daily basis in real-life. This experience provided students an insight into social justice and other issues and hopefully gave rise to some in-depth thought.
