News from the Principal
Welcome back to Term 4 to all members of the Centenary SHS community. I trust that all our students have had a relaxing break and are ready for the challenges of Term 4. The Year 12s in particular have a busy schedule over the next few weeks with final assessment before the signature events around graduation. It is essential that our seniors maintain their focus on their studies and continue to strive to improve in their results as there is still time to make a difference in their academic outcomes.
I look forward to meeting many of you in the number of community events we are hosting over the next few weeks.
In respect to Term 4 staffing, I welcome the following staff who are taking on contracts for the term:
Pam Hanna who will replace Alison Spencer
Martin Homan who will replace Mark Bartholomew
I take this opportunity to announce that Ms Deborah McIntyre who is currently Acting HOSE at Corinda SHS is the successful candidate for the Centenary SHS HOSE position.
Passing of Lotufou Sakaria Year 8
Lotufou Sakaria passed away on the second Wednesday of the holiday break as the result of an accident. Staff and students were understandably upset when this news was announced on their return from the holidays.
The school provided support through a Safe Room on the first day of the term as the news was announced.
Our thoughts are with the Sakaria family at this very sad time.
Trivia Night
The school’s P&C are hosting their second annual Trivia Night at the school on Friday October 28. The night will be based on the theme of The Olympics. It should prove to be a fun and relaxing evening with all funds raised contributing to the P&C’s Student Support Fund. Entry will be $15 a person with teams of 8 per table. Please support our school by booking a table. More information is available on pandc@centenaryshs.eq.edu.au.
Facility Upgrades
Air conditioning has been installed in the top floor of GS Block over the break. These rooms face the western sun and have long created challenges for effective teaching and learning. Hopefully this improvement will create a more conducive environment for staff and students alike. We have installed further solar panels to hopefully negate the additional power charges.
We have also built a deck area in front of the HU Block which has created more seating for students. This upgrade has been funded through an Education Queensland International Grant and will primarily serve as a meeting place for our International Students.
Sun Safety
With the warmer weather it is timely to remind our families of our Sun Safe policy. All students on the oval and court area must wear a sun safe hat. In HPE classes, students are expected to wear a hat but in the circumstances where it is not practical due to the nature of the physical activity, sunscreen must be applied.

Semester 2 Interim Reports
By now all students in Years 7 to 11 should have received their Semester 2 Interim reports via e-mail. This report provides students and parents/carers with a progress update which reflects their academic results, effort and behaviour for their subjects for Term 3. These reports were e-mailed to all parents/carers at the end of Week 1 in Term 4. If you did not receive a report please contact the school to arrange a copy. Please also check to make sure that your contact details, especially your e-mail address, are up to date so that you do not miss out on this important information. If any contact details have changed please inform the office staff.
Uniform Policy and Lunchtime Detentions
At Centenary SHS we have a uniform policy which is endorsed by our P&C Association. It is an expectation that all students abide by our uniform code and wear the correct school uniform with pride. We understand that from time to time there may be some circumstances where students are unable to wear the correct uniform to school. If this is the case, students should bring a note from home explaining the reason why they are out of uniform and they are to present this to the relevant Deputy Principal before the start of school, where they will be issued with a uniform pass for the day. If students fail to wear the correct uniform or fail to organise a uniform pass for the day, they will be issued with a lunch time detention from their HG teacher. It is very important that students attend these detentions as failure to do so will result in the students receiving an after school detention on a Friday afternoon. There has been a slow rise in the number of students failing to attend lunch time and after school detentions. May we remind you that it is our school policy that if a student receives three or more after school detentions in one term, then suspension will be considered as a suitable consequence. Your assistance in helping students adhere to our school rules and procedures is greatly appreciated.
2016 PRESENTATION EVENING
The Centenary State High School Presentation Evening will be held on Thursday October 27. The Presentation Evening represents the opportunity for our school community to come together and acknowledge the excellent achievements of our students across the Academic, Cultural, Sporting and Community domains. Students awarded Gold and Silver Academic Awards will be presented with these on the night. Bronze Awards will be presented at Year Level assemblies after the Presentation Evening. Lists of students receiving all Awards are on display at the Resource Centre for students to check. Please ask your student if they have done so. The Presentation Evening begins officially at 7.00pm, so we ask all audience members to be seated by 6:45pm. We look forward to seeing you on the evening.

School Fees
All school fees for 2016 are due on the 31st October 2016, unless you have entered into a payment plan. If your family is experiencing financial difficulties, please contact the school office to make alternative payment arrangements.
Payment Options
Payment of the participation fee may be made over the counter by cheque or cash or EFTPOS (Debit Card; MasterCard or Visa) or by direct deposit (internet banking), or BPOINT. The Direct deposit, BPay and BPOINT option allows parents the convenience of making payments from home and alleviates the need to pay over the counter transactions in person.
BPOINT
BPOINT is an additional payment method which is available to all parents/carers to pay school invoices. The internet web link enables you to authorise to have your credit or debit card in a secure environment. BPOINT offers several payment options including:
- Internet payment via web link
- Single direct debit
- Re-occurring direct debit
All future invoices and statements will display this payment option. You will need the Customer Reference Number (CRN) which is printed on the bottom of your invoice or statement before payment can be processed.
For more information and the link to BPOINT please see our website.
http://www.centenaryshs.eq.edu.au
Internet Banking
For payments made by direct deposit (internet banking) use the details that are indicated on the front of the invoice or statement. The reference space provided for these payments is only 15 characters long. Please ensure that either the Debtor ID or Invoice number is recorded in this space.
Parent Experiencing Financial Difficulties
A parent wishing to participate in the Student Resource Scheme and experiencing financial hardship is encouraged to contact the Business Services Manager to discuss how their financial obligations can be met throughout the school year, or to negotiate alternative arrangements that may be available to accommodate their individual circumstances. All discussions will be held in the strictest confidence.

Food for Thought
Earlier in the year I heard a speaker talking about the year ahead. The audience was challenged to consider giving up two things in their lives that may be having a negative effect on them.
This made me think of a couple of things that almost all of us are guilty of doing – complaining and arguing. If you think that this doesn’t apply to you, try to get through just one whole day without saying something negative either to someone or about someone. You’ll be amazed at how hard that is.
If someone or something is upsetting you, make the decision to not keep talking about the issue – without fuel the fires of anger will subside.
Why not give it a try and give up – complaining and arguing.
Helpful tips on coping with change
Change is usually easier to accept if you feel confident that you can deal smoothly with new experiences. Here are some tips:
- Anticipate change. Take steps to avoid becoming rigid and afraid of new experiences. Throughout life, keep making friends, exploring a variety of interests and activities, and accepting new challenges at work.
- Take care of your physical and emotional health. If you’re facing a big change, take extra care to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and limit your alcohol consumption.
- Learn some relaxation techniques. You might find it helpful to take a yoga class or listen to relaxation music, which is available at most bookstores and public libraries. Or set aside a few minutes each day (in the morning, at night, or on your lunch hour) to visualize yourself remaining calm and happy.
- Keep an open mind. Try not to jump to conclusions about the change you’re facing. Just because you haven’t done something before doesn’t mean you won’t like it.
- Gather information. The most stressful thing about change may be the uncertainty it brings. To ease your anxieties learn as much as you can about what you’ll be facing. Do research on the Internet or at the library. Talk to friends and fellow service members who’ve faced the same kind of change and ask what helped them the most in dealing with it. Or read a book such as Who Moved My Cheese? (Simon & Schuster, 1998) by Spencer Johnson, which talks about different styles of coping with change.
Coping with Change
- Limit or “pace” your changes. Try not to take on a big change before you’ve adjusted to another one or a lot of smaller changes all at once. If you know that you’re already experiencing stress, if possible, try to postpone making big decisions that will bring about more change and, possibly, more stress.
- Talk about your feelings with people who can help. Be as specific as you can about your concerns. You might say to your spouse, “I have more responsibilities at this new duty station and it’s become harder for me to make dinner every night. I’d like to hear your ideas on what we can do about this.”
- Consider joining a support group. If a change feels too big to handle alone, consider joining a support group for people who are going through a similar experience. You might join a group for step-parents, newcomers to a community, or people who have begun caring for an older adult with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Check with your installation family support or community service centre for support activities. You can find groups listed in the weekly calendar in community newspapers or by searching the Internet for a national organisation devoted to the issue that concerns you.
- Consider seeing a professional counsellor. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even strong people need support and guidance when faced with tough circumstances.
- Hold onto your sense of humour. When you’re feeling stressed, rent a video or DVD of your favourite comedy or go out to lunch with a friend who always makes you laugh. Or write about your experiences in a journal. Even if you have trouble finding the humour in your situation right away, you’ll be able to see it when you re-read your journal later on, which may help you cope with future changes more smoothly.

News from the School Nurse
Just a friendly reminder for all our eligible students, staff and family members, we still have approximately 30 spots available.
Any person over the age of sixteen has the opportunity to donate blood once a year and if you’re eighteen or over, you can do so every six months. Currently only 1 in 30 people give blood, but 1 in 3 people will need blood in their lifetime. In order to make this happen, we are once again bringing the donation van to our school car park on October 31 and November 1.
If you are able to donate outside of the school, you can mention Centenary SHS’s name to add to our total donations that we achieve. Donating takes less than an hour and those who do so can save up to three lives, just from one donation. There will be information and permission forms sent to families in Years 11 and 12 in the following weeks and we will continue to provide information closer to the dates.
In the meantime, please consider getting involved and having the discussion with your child. We look forward to seeing many brave faces rolling up their sleeves and saving lives.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact either Dy Moxham or Danielle Ringrose, Year 12 Coordinator to register your name for the days.

Awards Night
Thursday October 27 is the Sports Awards Presentations. Students have been asked to check the sports noticeboard to confirm their sporting involvement throughout 2016. Students that have qualified for a silver or a gold award will be presented with these on Awards Night. The final list of successful students will be posted on the noticeboard this week and notes will be sent home. If you have any questions please contact Tamara Nasalio in Staffroom 4.
Orienteering
Year 12 Physical Recreation has just completed a unit on Orienteering. This is a new sport that we have introduced into our curriculum and it has been a huge success. Each week the students completed orienteering courses at school in order to develop their skills. It was exciting to see the students’ knowledge and enthusiasm for orienteering continue to grow throughout the term. At the completion of the unit students went to Rocks Riverside Parklands and participated in an Orienteering course. This proved extremely successful and challenging.
AllSchools Touch Football
Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 competed at the QLD AllSchools Touch Football Championship. This Championship is the largest in the world with over 400 teams competing over 5 days. Centenary SHS’s touch team has been training extremely hard throughout the year and the hard work, commitment and dedication paid off. The team improved every game and by the end of the Championship they were playing like I have never seen them play before. This opportunity allowed the students to see the best schools compete and to play against them. The team was extremely competitive and were successful in a few games. However, in the games that they did lose, they only lost by 1 and in the one game that saw a larger score line not once did they drop their heads or stop pushing forward. It is this determination and commitment that made me extremely proud to be their coach. A big thank you must go to Mr Richter who attended a training session in the holidays and came and supported the team on Saturday. Mr McDonald has also been helping the team and it is because of the support from our school community that the team has continued to grow and develop. This team plays every Friday night at Whites Hill and will only continue to improve.

All Schools Track and Field
Last weekend a number of students competed in the Queensland Athletics South Queensland Finals. This competition had the majority of the GPS and AIC schools represented as well as some other top Athletic schools, so as a consequence it was a very high quality meet. Centenary SHS students acquitted themselves extremely well coming away with a number of places as well as many personal bests.
What was also very pleasing was that our squad had a number of students who competed well in higher age groups as part of the competition, which holds us in good stead for the coming years as the students further develop. This meet also was valuable preparation for the upcoming State Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships in which a number of our squad members are competing.

Cultural News
Welcome back to the final term of 2016, a term in which we bid farewell to our Year 12 students, and start making preparations for 2017. We have certainly had a very busy year so far, and Term 4 will not be without its challenges. Coming up in the next couple of weeks we have some big events so please take note of the date claimer below for details.
Vocal Ensemble Success
In the last week of last term, our Vocal Ensemble travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Vocal Australia AUSACA competition. On the Thursday afternoon semi-finals, we were one of 7 seven schools competing for four spots in the grand final, and our kids did brilliantly! Not only did they win the semi-final, they also got awards for Best Contemporary Song, Best Vocal Percussionist (Ethan Smith) and Best Musical Arrangement for Alex Van den Broek! A sensational effort. They then moved to the evening grand final with 3 other schools against 4 schools who already had made it through from the video submission rounds.
They again performed brilliantly, but unfortunately did not place in the top 3. I genuinely believe our kids sang better than the third place getters, but I am a little bit biased! Alex did win Best Musical Arrangement again though!
Our goal was to reach the final and we smashed that! More importantly though, our kids were just beautiful; well behaved, kind, respectful, supportive and cheering all of the other schools, a pleasure to be with. And, we were the only State School in the grand final, flying the public education flag proudly. Huge shout out to Alex who did a wonderful job preparing the group!

Senior Subjects
It is crunch time for Years 11 and 12 students! Effectively Year 12 students have six weeks of class time remaining before the exam block commences and Year 11 students are faced with seven weeks of lessons prior to their exams. Students need to refer to the assessment calendar to establish when items are due, organise a work schedule to manage their time effectively and commit to honouring due dates. It’s too tempting to procrastinate which ultimately creates unnecessary pressure on students to complete work. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend to their respective assessment pieces in a diligent manner.
Billycart
A number of surplus billycarts have been constructed by Years 7 and 8 students as part of their STEP programme. These carts are now available for purchase for a cost of $70.00.
Some details about the billycarts:
- The chassis is constructed from structural pine
- The seat is constructed from exterior ply
- The wheels are constructed with a steel rim and a solid rubber tyre. They run on roller bearings.
- Shake proof washers or nylon lock nuts are used to ensure that fasteners remain tight
- Steering is achieved with an exterior grade rope
If you intend to purchase a billycart, please contact the ITD staffroom to receive payment details and arrange collection (Ph.: 3373 4507). First in, first served.
Years 7 and 8 Classes
Years 7 and 8 Applied Technology classes have rotated for the final time for the year. Consequently, a number of students in each of these year levels would have commenced either an ITD or Home Economics subject this term.
Teacher Absence
Mr Bartholomew is currently on leave due to a health issue. He has been replaced by Mr Homan. I received advice today that Mr Bartholomew will be absent for the remainder of the school year.
Certificate II in Engineering Pathways
As the year draws to a close, it is important that the semester two theoretical units associated with Certificate II in Engineering Pathways are completed. Blue Dog Training have indicated that all units are due by Monday, October 10 but understand that some students may require additional time to complete the theoretical component of the course. Mr Tim Newton, Blue Dog Training advisor, informed the students that while leniency would be considered, it was not to be abused. Students were further advised to establish a work plan and spend some time each week day to complete a number of units.
Presentation Evening
The award recipients for Presentation Evening have been identified and I congratulate those students for their award winning performances. As Head of Department, it is most pleasing to be able to acknowledge those students who excel in effort and aspire to achieve.
Subject Charges
Some parents/carers may soon receive a reminder notice regarding the payment of outstanding subject charges. It would be appreciated if these payments could be finalised promptly because the money is used to subsidise the purchase of consumable materials used to produce projects in the practical subjects. Your attention to this matter is appreciated.

News from Humanities
The Humanities/Languages department has 2 significant things to celebrate. First, for the second year in a row, a Centenary SHS student is the Qld History Champion.
The second awesome thing to acknowledge is the highly enjoyable and illuminating trip to China led by Chinese language teacher Son Dinh and Deputy Principal Sallyann Griffith. Students at Centenary SHS can access a high-quality Chinese language course and study Chinese within various disciplines such as Modern and Ancient history, Economics and Geography but there is nothing as rewarding as visiting China and interacting with its people. The students who went on the trip now have memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. I will let them share their travel stories in the next newsletter.
We try our best to support all our courses with meaningful and exciting experiences outside of the classroom.
This term the Year 9 Geography students will be travelling to the Northey St Farm to see how a vegetable garden can flourish in an urban environment. Northey St Farm is highly skilled at educating young people about the social values and economic principles that should underpin sustainable agriculture.
The Year 10 Geography students will be going to Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. No doubt the weather will be brilliant but they will be there on serious business. Students will be looking at the way the Palm Beach community is attempting to balance rapid residential development with the goal of protecting the natural environment.
In week five the department will celebrate the Mexican festival, The Day of the Dead. The festival is a joyous tribute to a person’s ancestors. Spanish language teacher, Rosie Reyes, has organised face painting, dancing, and craft activities to run throughout the week. A truly wonderful mariachi band will play for the students.
And finally this term, we are inviting students from neighbouring primary schools to be a part of our Chinese Day of Excellence. Chinese language teacher, Eva Cramb, has assembled, once again, a dynamic program featuring lion dancing, calligraphy and engaging explorations of Chinese popular culture. Some of our best Chinese language students will be helping out on the day.
It is pleasing to observe that a large number of Year 10 students have selected one or more Humanities subjects to study in 2017.
A Humanities course equips students with academic skills that are highly valued in a range of professions such as carrying out research, analysis, debating issues and writing reports. It is frequently the case that engineers, doctors and scientists who can write well are the ones who advance rapidly in their field.
Over the last few years there has been a growing trend of Humanities subjects contributing to strong OP results. In 2011 28% of students who obtained an OP of 1 to 5 studied a Humanities course. In 2012 46% of students who obtained an OP of 1 to 5 studied a Humanities subject. In that year two of the five students who achieved an OP 1 also studied three Humanities subjects each.
Last year 53% of those students who achieved an OP of 1 to 5 studied Humanities. The Humanities department is very proud of this result. Now it is generally appreciated that a Humanities course can help students access high quality tertiary pathways.

News from Year 11 Coordinator
Welcome Back - Roll on Term 4
Welcome back for Term 4. As I write this article the Year 11 students have completed applications for leadership positions in 2017. Good luck to all applicants. These students presented speeches to their cohort on Monday October 10 during the extended Home Group lesson. These applicants have been shortlisted by student and teacher votes, quality of speeches and application letter. The students successful in being shortlisted will then have a formal interview on the student free day, Monday October 17. Again I wish all the Student Leader Applicants the best of luck.
A number of Year 11 students have volunteered to give blood. Students should have received consent forms. Students and teachers will be donating blood. Australian Red Cross Blood Service will be at Centenary SHS on both Monday October 31 and Tuesday November 1. This is a wonderful opportunity to donate to a very worthwhile cause. This initiative has been instigated by the Year 12 Council from previous years and is now a part of Centenary SHS. It is hoped that the Year 11s of 2016 will continue with this event in 2017, so it stays a tradition.
We are in the process of choosing designs for the 2017 Senior School Jersey. The committee has met with the provider and worked on designs for students to vote on in the following week. Orders and deposits will then be taken and given to the supplier in the hope we receive them in Term 1, 2017. This of course will depend on students being prompt with orders and payments this month.
This term is a shorter term, so students must adhere to strict time-lines. I cannot emphasise enough the need for the students to manage their time well. Students will have the same process that they have had previously this year with the signing off of the Green Sheet before Exam block and possible Catch Up of work if not completed during Exam Block.
I wish students all the best for this ’fast and furious’ term.

I am so proud of the Year 9 students and the manner in which they have conducted themselves this year and the many students who have achieved success academically, as well as in the areas of sporting and cultural. I am looking forward to recognising these students at our annual Awards Presentation night later this month.

News from Year 7 Coordinator
We are in our final term of the year, and I have been amazed by the growth experienced by the students over the year. We have just started our visits from the local primary schools, who are participating in Science classes. Our Year 7, 2017 parent night was held on Monday. All of this heralds the beginning of the next phase for our current Year 7s who this term will begin their transition to Year 8.
Moving to Year 8 is marked by several changes in educational expectations and practices. In Year 7 our students are mostly taught in self-contained classrooms with a familiar set of peers and two core teachers for Maths/Science and English/Humanities. Once students reach Year 8 however, they will interact with more peers, more teachers, and may find that there are new expectations for both academic performance and individual responsibility. Social, developmental, and academic experiences are impacted, requiring them to fine-tune what they see as new settings, arrangements, and expectations as they move out of the JS building and into the larger school. All of this comes at a time when they are also experiencing a host of changes associated with the transition from childhood to adolescence. With each passing day, we are watching the students begin to mature physically, and to think of themselves as individuals outside of their families. Their attention turns to exercising independence and developing strong relationships with peers — while avoiding exposure and embarrassment.
While we support them here at school through our Home Group Program, parents/carers find themselves asking how they can support their students in this new phase. Remind your student that the Year 7 year puts them at an immense advantage in terms of high school transition. Students already know the structures and expectations of the school, as well as having established friendship groups.
The young adolescent must feel successful in school, have opportunities for self-expression and decision-making, and feel cared for and respected as a person. You can support them by staying involved in your student’s schooling; encourage their efforts to become independent; maintain strong family connections with your young person; and be alert to signs of anxiety in your student and seek help.
As always, we are here to support your child, not just in their academic success, but also in their social and emotional wellbeing.

News from our P&C
Welcome back. I trust you have all had a good holiday and are ready for our final term of 2016.
I had the pleasure of attending the Science Extravaganza here at school in August. It was a dynamic evening with displays and plenty of hands on experiments to keep the crowds occupied. It was great to see so many people of all ages at this event and to see the involvement of our local feeder Primary Schools showing us their experiments. The culmination was a spectacular fireworks display. Congratulations to Allen Moodley and his team for once again organising such a successful evening.
Thank you Sarah and her team for all their hard work organising the successful Bunnings BBQ recently and all the other events that have kept them all busily raising funds for our Performing Arts students.
Thank you also to Cheryl and the Canteen team for all their hard work. They are constantly coming up with new ideas for theme days and ways to improve the menu.
We have been very busy getting the Uniform Shop project happening. It is all systems go with our new demountable building ordered. Installation and fit out should happen in November. After that we can start to look at our Canteen expansion.
Our big item for this term is our P&C TRIVIA NIGHT on Friday October 28. The Trivia committee has been working extremely hard chasing sponsors for our event and organising all the details. Many local businesses have been extremely generous in making prize donations to help us raise funds for our Student Care Fund. Well done Team Trivia and thank you for all your hard work so far. It should be a most enjoyable night with loads of prizes, raffles, games, etc.
We can’t let the HPE teachers table win again so get your costumes ready, sharpen your Trivia knowledge, gather a group of friends and prepare for a fun-filled night of entertainment and trivia with an OLYMPIC theme (costuming and decorations only).
