The Retrospective
As the 2016 school year nears its end, it is timely to reflect upon the successes and challenges of the last 12 months. Centenary SHS has been committed to a very real improvement agenda with the priority of improving the quality of learning and schooling experience for each and every student in the school. Significant milestones include:
- Continued strong Year 12 outcome data with our 2015 Year 12 Cohort achieving 99.5% QCE and 83% OP 1-15 – and we remain on track for strong outcomes in 2016
- Continued outstanding NAPLAN numeracy outcomes with 30% of students in Years 7 and 9 achieving in the upper Two Bands
- Winning the Brisbane West Track and Field for the second year in a row
- Two outstanding productions in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Suessical the Musical
- A highly successful school Open Day in May
- Our A Capella group making it to the finals of the national schools competition again and being the highest placed public school
- A successful student trip to China in the September holidays
- Past student success: 2010 School Dux Ellen Cliff being awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and 2008 Senior Grant Irvine becoming the school’s first Olympian
I take this opportunity to thank all members of the Centenary SHS community for their support throughout the year. We sadly farewell Jess Porter who has held the role of Sports Director in the school for the last 6 years. Jess has moved to North Queensland. I also wish to acknowledge the contributions of parents/carers who have directly involved themselves in the life of the school – whether it be volunteering in the canteen, participating in the P&C, supporting the Arts program or coaching a sporting team … thank you – our school is stronger for your efforts.
Graduating Year 12 Cohort
The signature events for the Year 12 Cohort held in their last week of school formed a fitting tribute to the group. One of the pleasures of teaching is to witness the growth and maturing of students across their secondary education. A stand out feature of the 2016 graduates was their ability to have fun but respect their school and others at the same time. We wish them well for life post Centenary SHS.

2017 Plans
We are currently working on our 2017 strategic plans with Writing for Learning, Innovative Practice – Thinking Tools and Digital Technology, and Student Wellbeing having been identified as whole school priorities. These areas will receive significant focus and resourcing as we endeavour to improve student learning in 2017.
Year 12s will begin the school year with mentoring interviews. This is a key intervention strategy in ensuring our 2017 Seniors are on track to achieve in their final year of schooling.
On behalf of the Centenary SHS staff - may you and your family enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday.

Social Media @ Centenary SHS
Communication with our school community is important to our day-to-day work at Centenary SHS. In order to connect with our community members more often, Centenary SHS has joined Facebook and Twitter. Social Media provides fantastic opportunities to celebrate the achievements of students as well as keeping parents/carers, students and other community members informed with what is happening at the school.
Education Queensland has a fantastic resource about Social Media and the Community which gives all community members some information about how to use the school sites most effectively.
Additionally, the school will be updating media consent for students to encompass these new websites as well updating permissions for our existing resources such as the school webpage.
Most importantly you can find us on Facebook at the link below or connect with us via Twitter @CentenarySHS.

Food for Thought
How would you finish the following sentence?
Teenagers nowadays……………
Some people might choose words such as these:
‘are out of control’, ‘are disrespectful and rude’ or ‘are violent and abusive’.
Let me assure you that, though these comments might fit a small percentage of teenagers, they definitely do not apply to the vast majority.
A much larger percentage of our young people work hard at school, are busy on weekends with sports and/or other hobbies, and once old enough, are also busy with part-time jobs.
Please take the time to look for the good in each of our young ones and encourage them in their efforts.
Teenagers nowadays are all individuals who, with the nurturing effect of guidance, love and support, will very likely turn into wonderful young adults.
A message from Chappy Bernie
Hi I am Bernie McMullen, and I am the Chaplain of Centenary State High School. I have been a chaplain at this school for the last seven years, and it has been a fantastic journey with many wonderful people.
It has been an honour to be part of these young people’s lives, walking with them in the highs and lows of their school journey. It has been a privilege to work with the most professional team of people in this education environment, each sharing, providing guidance to each of the students.
I have been reflecting on the year past and looking with excitement on the new incoming year. There have been many wonderful events that I am proud to be part of at Centenary State High school. I have enjoyed the challenge of having a junior school at Centenary SHS, made up of Years 7 to 9. Both are different and I have enjoyed working with both levels.
I have discovered there are many different people who go that little bit further to help the students at this school. This is shown by the Senior Leadership team who guide the ship, to the fantastic, caring and supportive teachers. There is also the great support staff and all the groundsmen and cleaners whose work is to provide a good caring supportive environment for the student and parents/carers of Centenary State High School.
At this time of Christmas, I hope everybody will relax and enjoy the festive season. We are all allowed to relax and share the celebration with the ones we love. I take this opportunity to wish all the Centenary State High School community a Very Holy Christmas and a safe Happy New Year. I am looking forward to an exciting year in 2017.

SPORTS DIRECTOR
We are now drawing to a close after a very successful sporting year in 2016. We have an extremely busy start to the year in 2017 and I would like to ensure that parents/carers are aware of important sporting dates. Touch Football
The season has come to an end for Centenary SHS Touch Football. It has been an amazing season and the team has shown an improvement every single week! As a coach I could not ask for a more committed team. In the semi-final it was by far the best game the team ever played even though they did not win. The boys did not leave anything on the field and gave 110%. The boys not only played the highest level of touch but it was to my amazement that they were reading the play and evaluating the game perfectly!
In 2017 I am aiming at entering both an U/15 and an Open Boys Touch Football Team into QLD AllSchools Championship and into the Friday night competition at BMTA. I have already had an expression of interest for U/15 boys to nominate so we can commence training as soon as school returns in Term 1. It is exciting to watch the players grow and learn within the sport and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve next year.

News from SCRAM
What about all those sparkling clean cars at Centenary SHS!!!
The carpark at school this term has been filled with sparkling clean cars thanks to our awesome group of students who are in the Carwash for Charity group as part of our STEP program. This group of students spend each Wednesday Lesson 4 washing and shining teachers’ cars all in the name of Charity.
The group of students, led by Mr Thandrayan and Ms Reyes, ensure that any car that arrives in their wash bay each Wednesday, is diligently washed and shined and the tyres blackened so that when the teachers come to collect their car they are greeted with a sparkling clean vehicle. This has made many teachers very happy this term!
The teachers are not the only ones to benefit however. Local charity Sheltered by Grace, which works to provide housing for the homeless, will also benefit from this as all of the money that is being raised by the students will be donated to them. The target that the group is aiming for is $500 – and they are well on their way to achieving this!
http://www.sbg.org.au
The students have really enjoyed the activity with some of them saying ‘I love washing cars as they look so good when they are finished’ and others saying that ‘we love doing this because we know the money raised is going to a good cause’. Of course the students have also enjoyed the opportunity to ‘play’ with some water on these hot days we have been having.
Well done to all the students involved in the Carwash for Charity group. They have done a great job this trimester, not only at washing lots of cars but also raising lots of money for charity. This is another example of the great opportunities that students get through our STEP program.

Cultural News
Goodbye 2016

So thank you to all of the students, staff, parents/carers and friends who have contributed to making our cultural program one of relevance, success and most of all fun.
Special thanks and acknowledgement to Mr Philippe who served as Acting Head of Department this year. We wish you all the best with your future endeavours.

Junior Secondary News
It is hard to believe that the 2016 School Year is over! It seems like just a few weeks ago that we welcomed the Year 7s to our school community, and now they are about to enter Year 8.
2016 has been a very busy year for our junior students both in and out of the classroom. It is pleasing to see how many students get involved in the range of activities offered here at Centenary. One recent event was the Halogen Leadership Day – please see the article below written by Year 7 student, Annika.
I look forward to working with next year’s students and parents in the Junior School! I would also like to wish Berenice Furlong and the current Year 9s all the best as they ‘move on up’ to the Senior School. At the recent ‘moving on up’ assembly, it was wonderful to see how much these students have flourished over the past two years under the leadership and care of Berenice.
Best wishes to you all for a wonderful break over the holidays.
Halogen Youth Leadership Conference.
On the 14th of November, a group of Year 7, 8 & 9 students from CSHS went to Halogen. For those who don't know, Halogen is a day when the next generation of future leaders (us) are invited to go to listen to people who have conveyed leadership in their life. Some of the people who spoke this time round were Alyssa Azar, the youngest Aussie to climb to the peak of Mt Everest, Danielle Prince, our Rio Olympics representative for rhythmic gymnastics, the Young Australians of the Year and many more. At the end of the day we came out with quotes like "Don't be bitter, be better" and "Never doubt that a small group of hopeful, powerful people can change the world". On top off all the speeches we got to have more of a hands on time where we could get photos and talk to the speakers and we could also talk to people from charities, universities and people from the Defence Force that have made the world a better place. During the day there were also competitions and activities that you could do to win prizes. Those who made time to talk to the charities, universities and people from the Defence Force scored freebies like a book on how to be a leader and a calculator. All up the day was amazing and awe-inspiring, so if you ever get the chance you should definitely go. We even learnt a new word: flearn… which means “learning through failure”. Annika (Year 7)

News from Applied Technology
Year 9 Home Economics
Students in the Year 9 Home Economics class have recently been investigating the topic of Food Sustainability.
What constitutes a sustainable food?
What are some of the farming practices which assist in the production of sustainable food?
What are the economic and social advantages of promoting sustainable food?
How can the consumer influence the production of sustainable food?
How can a consumer be assured that they are purchasing sustainable food?
To provide students with an opportunity to work with accredited sustainable food, pancakes were selected. The class was presented with a variety of basic ingredients and a time frame of seventy minutes. The challenge was to produce attractive and delicious pancakes using the supplied ingredients and then present them for the ultimate form of assessment – the taste test.
The clean plates indicated that sustainable food tastes goooood!
Year 8 Industrial technology and Design
The Year 8 students have been applying a design process to produce a balloon powered vehicle.
Students were presented with samples of 3mm ply and a balloon. Once the materials were issued, students needed to consider how to incorporate them into their vehicle. Lots of initial thoughts were recorded as conceptual sketches, with some of the more feasible ideas enduring testing. Many of the chassis and vehicle bodies were the product of raiding the home recycle bin. Wheels were designed and then shaped from the ply, using the laser cutter.
Students were also required to decide how they were to judge the success of their respective vehicles. For example, were they required to travel a particular distance? Were they to travel fast or slow? Were they to travel in a straight line?
Some fantastic designs were produced and the students generally succeeded with their design proposals.
Staff Update
Mr Bartholomew has recently been fitted with a new pace maker. He was resting comfortably when I spoke with him. Medical advice suggests that he takes things easy for the next few months, therefore the date of his return to work remains undecided.
Reports
Reports will be arriving soon. Please spend some time reviewing the results. If there is room for improvement, it is important to establish what has inhibited a greater degree of success and then decide what changes need to occur. The “subject” tends to be an easy and often incorrect cause of the problem. I ask that commitment to the course requirements be considered as well as the student’s general routine regarding time assigned to homework, assignment tasks, part-time work and social interests.
Congratulations to those students who are satisfied with their results and I look forward to an improvement from those who acknowledge that they are capable of producing better outcomes.
Enjoy a restful and safe summer vacation and I trust you experience great times with family and friends.

Graduation
On Monday 28th November we celebrated the Year 9s reaching another milestone, completing Junior School. I remember the first day I met these students in 2014 at the orientation day. Together we have grown and begun our first years of high school in the Junior School. It has been an incredible journey and I have thoroughly enjoyed supporting these awesome young people. I am excited to be continuing as this group’s YLC in 2017 and beginning their journey in the Senior School.
Year 9 High Resolves team
Our Year 9 High Resolves students participated in the annual leadership Summit at the University of Queensland on the 22nd November. The theme of the Summit was Global Leadership and students heard from a range of motivational speakers and leaders from various fields. Students also work together with High Resolves Leaders from other schools on social action leadership challenges. Thank you to the Year 9 High Resolves team who have also stepped up to take on leadership roles this year and for being such awesome ambassadors for our school. Thank you also to Ms Law for guiding and supporting the students this year and to Mrs Caruso for attending the Summit.
“The High Resolves experience is great, it is a chance to meet new people, create change on social action issues and make a difference in our world.” Mollie Taylor
“High Resolves was an incredible experience for me. I got to a chance to learn new skills and make new friends while creating a social change to stop racism in our society. It was really fun to do the activities and I wasn't paid to say that.” Duy Dau

Year 9 student Leaders
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 9 Junior School leaders – Samantha McKay, Thuwanon Chotrueng, Miranda Callum and Zac Jones for the amazing job they have performed as the “voices of Year 9s”. I have been so proud of them and the manner in which they have conducted themselves in their leadership role. Thank you to my FAB4 – Sam, Bank, Miranda and Zac – you have been an absolute delight to work with.

News from our Canteen
Well another year is drawing to a close.
The Canteen has had a very busy year. We have introduced some new and exciting meal options, both hot and cold. We have enjoyed our themed Red Days which have proven very popular with the students.
We look forward to the start of next year and a new group of Year 7s. It is always exciting for them to buy food from the Canteen in a High School situation.
A reminder that the Canteen is always looking for volunteers. It's a way to meet other people, enjoy a coffee and get out of the house. I promise, no washing up and no money handling.
I hope everyone has a wonderful, happy Christmas and an even better New Year.

News from our P&C
President’s report for November 2016
The Trivia committee worked extremely hard chasing sponsors for our event and organising all the details. A big thank you to all the local businesses (please see names below) who have been extremely generous in making prize donations to help us raise a fantastic amount of money for our Student Care Fund so we can continue to help those students most in need in our school community. We have distributed Certificates of Appreciation to them all.
It was a very successful night. We had over 120 people there on 14 tables. A lot of fun was had by all. We have had many positive responses from staff and parents/carers who want to book their table for next year already and are bringing more people with them. I don’t think the Olympic Legends (our HPE teachers and friends) have come down from their high yet after being crowned winners yet again!!
Congratulations to our canteen ladies (aptly named Meals on Wheels) who took out the best dressed table prize dressed as a cycling team complete with bike. 3 of our 4 major raffle prizes went to school staff and one to a patron on the night. Congratulations to them all. So, well done Team Trivia and thank you for all your hard work.
We have been very busy overseeing the Uniform Shop project. The building has been placed on site and the fit out is being constructed off site presently. So, much excitement to finally have things happening after so long in the planning.
Congratulations to all students who received awards at our recent Presentation evening. Well done on all your hard work this year. We wish all Year 12 students well in their future endeavours and, to all of our students, well done on another year of hard work and achievement.
I would like to express my appreciation to all the P&C members who have supported us this year. We really appreciate your feedback and input as we couldn’t do this job without you. Our most important role is to maintain a good relationship with the school and to support the curriculum, uniform policy, annual operation plans, budgets, facilities, etc. This is where your input is valued.
So, a big thank you to Cheryl, Jenelle, Jodie, Toni, Maryanne and Emma in the canteen and uniform shop and of course to our band of volunteers. It has been a very productive and successful year and we look forward to a new improved canteen in the not too distant future.
Thank you to Bernie, our Chaplain, for the invaluable work he does around our school community. He is always ready to stop and chat and give of his time. Many thanks also to Kym and Peter for the thankless task of pursuing and applying for grants.
To John, Charmaine and all the admin and teaching staff, thank you for your support and co-operation.
I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge David and Susan, my Executive Committee, for all they have done in this extremely busy year. Thank you also to Sarah and the Arts Sub-committee for all their efforts in fundraising an amazing amount this year towards the A Capella tour and our Arts Scholarships for our Year 7 students for next year. Finally thanks to John and Terry, our Janitor and Groundsman, for all their help throughout the year. It is much appreciated by the P&C.
Thank you all. I wish all of you a Peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.
A BIG THANK YOU to our sponsors for our Trivia Night on October 28

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT
FACEBOOK page – The P&C have started a Facebook page called Centenary SHS Parent Group. You can do a search in Facebook and it will come up. Please send a request to join and Lucinda or Jenny (our administrators and P&C Executive members) will check that you have a current or future student at the school. It’s a forum where parents/carers of children attending Centenary SHS can seek and share information regarding local school events, daily general information, reminders about events coming up within the school, uniform sales, lost property at school, etc. Updates to our Trivia night will be posted here as well. No negative posts at all will be tolerated.

P&C UNIFORM SHOP NEWS
***NEW****FLEXISCHOOLS ONLINE ORDERING FOR UNIFORM SHOP
We now have our Uniform Shop purchases available through our online shop via FLEXISCHOOLS to make it easier for you to order your uniforms. You can simply place your order online for pickup at a nominated date to suit you. This will save waiting in line and provide a convenient shopping option for those who cannot get in to school.
Follow this link to logon if you already have an account and simply add the new school, or for those who don’t have one, you can create a new account.
http://www.flexischools.com.au
Details of how to use the system are on the information brochures below. A link is on the school website as well in the Quicklinks section of the Home page.
JANUARY 2017 UNIFORM SALES
Please try and purchase/order all your uniforms before the end of the current school year as we have limited opening times in the week before school goes back in January 2017. There will be opportunity on the following dates for sales and collections to be made from the Uniform Shop, however, QUEUES ARE USUALLY LONG AND THE TEMPERATURES ARE HIGH. Your patience will be required.
Thursday January 19 |
8am to 2pm |
Friday January 20 |
1pm to 5pm |
Uniform purchases can be made any normal uniform shop day until the end of the school year (8am to 11am Mon-Wed) and we encourage you to take up this option.
If your student grows over the holidays, the uniform can be exchanged for a larger size in January as long as it is unworn, unwashed and in its original condition.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We need volunteers to help us at each of these sessions to facilitate the smooth running of this event. No previous experience needed, just a willingness to help the new pupils and their parents/carers become familiar with our uniform and what their needs will be for next year.
If you can spare a couple of hours on one of these days, then please let me know at pandc@centenaryshs.eq.edu.au. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. You do not have to be a member of the P&C to help out.
SECONDHAND UNIFORMS - Secondhand uniforms can be donated to the uniform shop or you can advertise what you have to sell or would like to buy on our Facebook page (see details above).
The Athlete’s Foot School Rewards Program will support our P&C with a donation for any pair of shoes bought by a family member from their stores at Indooroopilly and Mt Ommaney. Just mention our school for us to benefit from the $5 donation. This applies to the whole family and across the entire footwear range including school, athletic, work and casual shoes. There are no restrictions and it’s unlimited. So spread the word! We thank them for their generous donation of $425 this year.
The first P&C meeting for 2017 will be Wednesday 15th February at 7pm in the Resource Centre.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
