Year 12s
Congratulations to our Year 12 cohort on their application to their studies as we near the end of their schooling. Our Queensland Certificate of Education predictions has steadily continued to increase as students complete certificate work. More importantly there have been wonderful individual student stories of success and improvement.
Students and Cars
As we enter the final weeks of the school year we have an increasing number of senior students driving to school. Whilst we appreciate the convenience of car travel for many families, there is an overwhelming need for drivers to accept the responsibilities and school requirements of student driving.
- All student drivers need to register their car at the office.
- Other students are not to travel with student drivers unless parent/carer permission is received in writing at the office.
- Students are to park in the lower car park on Yallambee Road and not in the streets adjoining the school.
- Road rules are to be followed at all times.
We all wish for happy and safe final weeks of the school year. Please discuss these responsibilities with your students.
Sun Safety
With the warmer weather it is timely to remind our families of our Sun Safety policy. All students on the oval and court area must wear a sun safe hat. In HPE classes, students are expected to wear a hat but in the circumstances where it is not practical due to the nature of the physical activity, sunscreen must be applied.
Student Achievement
Congratulations to our newly elected student leaders for 2018

Years 10 and 11 Exam Block
This year we will once again run an Exam Block for both Years 10 and 11 students.
Year 11 Exam Block – Wednesday
15th November to Wednesday 22nd November.
Year 10 Exam Block – Monday 20th November to
Wednesday 22nd November.
All Years 10 and 11 students will be required to attend school only for their scheduled exam, the normal timetable will be suspended for this period. In alignment with this process, all Years 10 and 11 students will be required to complete an assessment tracking sheet where they will need to complete all assessment and have their teacher sign off upon completion for each subject. This assessment tracking sheet is due to be submitted in the assignment drop box in the Resource Centre by 3pm, Monday 13th November. Any student with any outstanding assessment items will be required to attend a ‘catch up’ room at school during the exam block. Students will be required to remain in the ‘catch up’ room until all assessment is up to date.
Semester 2 Reports
Teachers are currently busy preparing and implementing assessment items across all year levels. The information gathered from these and various other assessment instruments will form the basis of the Semester 2 results. All Semester 2 report cards are scheduled to be e-mailed by the end of Week 10 this term. It is important that all contact details are correct, especially your e-mail address, so that you receive this valuable feedback about your son/daughter’s progress. Please contact the office staff to update any details that may have changed.

Future China Tour for Centenary SHS Students
The school has been looking into planning a School Tour to China to take place in September/ October 2018.
We have sought student expressions of interest and looked at the difficulties of travel within China in September/ October 2018 when Queensland school holidays happen to overlap significantly with October Week in China. This is a week when millions of Chinese people move significantly across China – a time we have previously been able to avoid.
We have made the decision to delay a possible China Tour for six months, until the 2019 Easter Holidays, which may prove to be a better time for future tours as well. Over the coming week the Languages Head of Department, Mr Adrian Skerritt, will be canvasing interest from students for a tour at this time. Our aim will be to make contact with parents/carers of interested students during this term. If you would like to put your student’s name forward please make contact with Mr Skerritt by email at asker6@eq.edu.au or Mrs Griffith at sgrif88@eq.edu.au.

School Fees
All school fees for 2017 are now due, unless you have entered into a payment plan. If your family is experiencing financial difficulties, please contact the school office to make alternative payment arrangements.
Payment Options
Payments can be made over the counter by cash or EFTPOS (Debit Card, MasterCard or Visa), by BPOINT or QParents. BPOINT and QParents options allow parents/carers the convenience of making payments from home and alleviates the need to pay over the counter transactions in person. For more information about QParents, please refer to the website.
BPOINT Option
BPOINT is an online payment system and is the preferred payment method for the Department.
This option is accessed through an internet web link which appears on all invoices and statements. This link can also be located in the Quicklinks section of our school’s homepage. You will need the Customer Reference Number (CRN) which is printed on the bottom of your invoice/statement before payment can be processed.
http://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete
When accessing the BPOINT web link on individual invoices all relevant information will prepopulate. Parents/Carers will only be required to enter their credit or debit card details.
INTERACTIVE VOICE RESPONSE (IVR) BPOINT is also available by dialling the 1300 number provided on individual invoices. This option will only accept credit cards.
ELECTRONIC DIRECT DEBIT REGISTRATION (eDDR) BPOINT is the approved payment plan option. To set up a payment plan, parents/carers will be required to contact the school office first.
For more information on BPOINT please refer to the school’s website.
PHONE OR COUNTER Payment Options
Payments can be made at the school office, Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 4.00pm. Payment options include credit and debit cards (EFTPOS), cheque and cash. Money orders are also accepted.
For payments over the phone, call the school on 3373 4555, Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 4.00pm and we will transfer you to the IVR BPOINT 1300 dedicated phone number. Only VISA or MasterCard can be used for this process. From 2018 schools are no longer able to accept credit card payments over the phone.
PLEASE NOTE: The office will be closed for over-the-count payments from Friday, 24 November 2017 and will re-open on Tuesday, 16 January 2018. In the closure period, invoices can be paid by any of the BPOINT options.
Changes to the way we invoice for 2018
As previously advised there are changes in the way we invoice parents/carers for 2018. In line with these changes, invoices for the Student Resource Scheme have been issued to all currently enrolled students returning in 2018. An early bird discount of $20 is applicable, if paid prior to 28 January 2018. These invoices now have a finalisation date of 31 July 2018, for those who do not wish to pay before the discount date.
For more information about the Student Resource Scheme and all other related fees please refer to our website or contact the school by email at admin@centenaryshs.eq.edu.au.
Parent/Carer Experiencing Financial Difficulties
A parent/carer wishing to participate in the Student Resource Scheme and is experiencing financial hardship is encouraged to contact the Business Manager to discuss how their financial obligations can be met throughout the school year, or to negotiate alternative arrangements that may be available to accommodate their individual circumstances. All discussions will be held in the strictest confidence.

News from the Student Leadership Coordinator
Last week, the students of Centenary SHS raised over $1100 for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Students showed their support for this incredibly important cause by wearing red and they also participated in a ‘Best Dressed’ competition, which was adjudicated by the student leaders and year coordinators in each year level. As well as the students, the staff and administration members showed their support and donned red for the day.
This week, we celebrated the success of our current Year 12 leaders. Their dedication, drive, passion and enthusiasm has been instrumental to the overall success of the Leadership Forum this year. Our two school captains, Darly and Nathan, received some major awards at this year’s Presentation Night – Darly winning the ‘Caltex All Rounder’ Award and the ‘Community Service’ – Student Citizenship Award, and Nathan winning the ‘ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork’ Award and the ‘Student Leaders Forum’ Award. They were so deserving of these prestigious honours, and I am so very proud of them. Luckily, they have also left a legacy that will continue on in the future in our new tradition – the annual ‘Golden Toaster’ award – an award going to the forum member who has shown dedication and true leadership qualities. The inaugural winner of this prestigious award went to one of our Year 9 leaders, Amy Lightbody. Congratulations, Amy!
Our last mission for the term is our ‘Positive Postcard’ project. Luckily for us, this project has coincided with World Teachers’ Day, so we are very happy to allow our students the chance to formally thank the amazing teachers, administration and auxiliary staff at our school.

Food for Thought
Each day we fill our minds with new things through the movies and TV programs that we watch, the books and magazines that we read and the music that we listen to. Please don’t underestimate the effect that choices in this area of our lives can have.
Think of your mind as being a container. You can decide what to fill it with, but remember this, if you fill a container with dirt, then dirt is all that will come out of it.
What are you filling the containers of your mind with?
A message from Chappy Bernie
Moving out of home is exciting, but leaving your family and living somewhere new can be overwhelming too. Get some tips on how to handle the transition to a new location, including what to do if you’re finding things really tough.
This can help if:
- You’re thinking of moving out of home
- You’re about to leave home for the first time
- You want help with deciding whether or not to move out
Moving boxes around
Should I stay or should I go?
When you begin to plan leaving home, it’s a good idea to think through all the things you need to do to prepare. Stuff you need to decide on before leaving home may include:
‘Do I want to go?’
You might be moving to study, to try something new, for work, or to feel more independent. Whatever the reason, be sure that leaving home is the right decision for you. If you feel pressured by other people to move out, talk to them about why you want to stay. Maybe suggest another time in the future to leave, when you’ll be better prepared and more comfortable with the idea.
‘Do I have somewhere safe to live?’
If you’re over 18 and have a stable income, you can probably move into shared accommodation with friends, look at renting your own place or join an existing share house through a site like Flatmate Finders. However, if you’re under 18, your age may make it difficult to rent a house or sign a lease.
If you’re leaving home because of family conflict or abuse, then there are refuges and supported accommodation services that may be available to you.
‘Do I have enough money to support myself?’
Learn about making a budget to see how much money you’ll need each week to pay the rent and buy what you need. If you don’t have a job or are still studying, you may be eligible for social security payments. Contact your nearest Centrelink office to find out what benefits you’re eligible to receive.
Coping with the adjustment
It’s hard to adjust to being away from the people you’re closest to and the environments you’re most familiar with. It’s normal to feel isolated, lonely and overwhelmed when you move away from friends and family.
Here are some strategies to help you adjust:
- Find new ways to communicate. Keeping in contact when you move away from friends and family takes extra effort. Facebook, emails, texts, Skype and phone calls are all easy, instant ways to keep in touch.
- Plan ahead. Plan times in advance to meet up with the people you’ve moved away from. It gives you something to look forward to. Suggest a reunion party with old friends, or make a dinner reservation for two so you and a mate can catch up the next time you’re in town.
- Get involved. A great way to meet new people and make new friends is to get involved in activities in your area that interest you, such as sport, music, community services, etc.
- Create your own space. Bring a bit of home to your new home. Familiar posters, your favourite doona, treasured photos, and so on, will be reassuring and make you feel more comfortable.
- Work out some coping strategies. These are unique things that make you feel better and more in control. Read how to develop your own ways of coping.
- Give it time. Moving away from friends and family is a big thing, and it takes time to get used to. Once you’re more familiar with your new routine and start to make new friends, it’s likely that being away will start to feel easier.
If you’re still finding it tough, talking to people about how you’re feeling can be really helpful, so bring up what’s going on with someone you trust, such as a friend or family member.

Awards Night
Centenary SHS’s Annual Presentation Night saw students being recognised for their sporting achievements. Congratulations to all award recipients. At the beginning of the year the HPE department set goals that they wanted to achieve in 2017. I am please to announce that we were able to achieve many of our set goals and we made history this year! This is the first time ever that Centenary SHS won the Overall District School Champion Trophy. It is an amazing achievement and the award shows how hard the students and staff at Centenary SHS worked in order to make this goal a reality.
A major goal that was set and that was announced at awards night was our huge success at the District Athletics Carnival. The HPE department set a goal to win Champion School for three years running. Not only did we achieve this goal but we also won the % trophy and the boys trophy. This was achieved only through hard work and commitment to training sessions throughout Terms 2 and 3. Mr Haines was the driving force behind this success, but every single teacher in the HPE department worked hard as a team which resulted in this record being achieved. Special mention also to our high performance guest coaches who have given their time to assist our athletes: Hannah Joye (Australian Representative 2014 Commonwealth Games), Trae Williams (Australian Men’s 100m Champion and World Championships Representative 2017), Alexandra Roberts (Australian Junior Javelin Champion and 3rd place, Youth Commonwealth Games), and Grayson Jenkins (Queensland Representative, Cross Country and Athletics).

Sam is a very gifted athlete who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the field. He has trained extremely hard in his chosen sports and the hard work and dedication definitely paid off.

Jake has worked hard throughout 2017 to achieve this award. He has achieved at State level in AFL both as a player and as an umpire. His hard work and dedication to sport is very admirable.
Interhouse Competition / House of the Year
During lunchbreaks the house captains have been running a very successful Interhouse Competition. The students have been thoroughly enjoying participating in sport during the breaks and the house captains have been doing a wonderful job coordinating the events. Students have already competed in basketball, volleyball and futsal.
House of the Year is awarded to the house with the most points accumulated from the Interhouse Carnivals and from the lunchtime competitions. Congratulations to Yallambee for winning 2017 Champion House of the Year.
Touch Football
Centenary SHS has two teams entered into an Open Boys and U/15 Boys touch football competition that compete every Friday night at Whites Hill Reserve, Camp Hill. Both teams are extremely committed to training sessions each week and to the weekly games. Both teams are doing very well and are proving to be very competitive. The U/15 team plays at 7.20 and the Open Boys play at 8.10pm if you are ever interested in coming out and supporting Centenary SHS Touch Football Teams. There is also a double header on Sunday, November 12 where both teams will play two games.
Swimming Carnival
Centenary SHS will be holding an Interhouse Swimming Carnival on Tuesday, December 5 in Week 10. Permission forms have been sent home with students as well as being emailed. Please ensure that your student returns this form ASAP to their HG teacher. The day will be filled with a lot of novelty events as well as competitive races. It is a fantastic way to finish the year and we hope to see all Years 7, 8 and 9 students there!

Our annual Primary School Tour took place on Tuesday, October 17 with the String Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Stage Band, Percussion Ensemble and Vocal Ensemble performing for the very enthusiastic primary schools students of Middle Park, Jamboree Heights and Jindalee. It is always a fun day, and a great farewell performance for our Year 12 students.
Presentation Night
Well done to all of our performers on the evening, and congratulations to all of our students who received Cultural Awards on the night. We are always extremely proud of our students who put in amazing amounts of effort in the cultural program, and are grateful for all that you have done throughout 2017.
It is always wonderful to see so many of our Arts students receiving academic, sports and community awards as well as subject prizes. Of course we know that our Arts students are the best in the school, but it is always wonderful to see them getting recognition throughout the wider school community.
Excellence in the Arts Prize
The recipient of the top Cultural Award is never an easy task with so many outstanding students doing wonderful things in the school. This year the senior award went to Year 12 student Lauren Hooper who has been strongly involved in many curricular and extra-curricular activities in and out of the school. Congratulations on an outstanding year in the Arts, Lauren!
The winner of the Junior Excellence in the Arts award went to Year 9 student Katie Lee Spresser who has been heavily involved in the choral program, musicals, and Performance Plus. Congratulations Katie Lee!

Year 10 Home Economics - Creative Cupcakes
Cupcakes and food outlets selling cupcakes have become very trendy in recent years. Varieties of flavours and decorations are only limited by one’s imagination and skills. The practical assessment component for Year 10 Home Economics students this term involved designing and producing six cupcakes based on a theme of their choice. The students demonstrated their cooking skills and attention to detail in the presentation of their cupcakes. Creative designs!

News from English
Congratulations to Year 7 student Rebecca Sellick who entered the 2017 Literary Competition, which is supported by the Independent Education Union of Australia and the English Teachers Association of Queensland. Rebecca’s short story The Black Leopard received a Highly Commended award. It is wonderful to see students who take pleasure and pride in creative writing, and also show the initiative to enter a competition independently. Well done Rebecca. I hope you continue to write at every opportunity.
I am proud to also report that we had a number of students who achieved Distinctions and High Distinctions in the ICAS English and Writing Competitions this year. The following students were presented with their certificates on Assembly recently:

Congratulations to all students. Whatever your result, you should all be very proud of your efforts and achievement.
The QDU Year 7 Debating competition has now finished for the year. We entered two teams this year, both enjoying a few wins throughout the competition. Most importantly, our students learned a great deal and grew in confidence and skill. Ms George has worked hard with the teams throughout the year and I want to thank her for her efforts. Her passion for debating has inspired our young people to develop into very capable debaters. I hope these students will continue with debating next year in the Year 8 competition. Thanks also to Ms Law for supporting Ms George with debating.
We are almost at the end of the year. Students in all year levels are busily working on their final pieces of assessment and soon teachers will be swallowed up in marking. Every student in every year level should be putting in their very best effort in order to achieve the best results possible. One final push, and then we can all go on holiday.
Finally, congratulations and farewell to our departing Year 12 students. It has been my pleasure and privilege to work with you this year and to watch you develop into such amazing young adults. I wish you the very best for the future. Learn how to balance work and play as you move into your adult lives. Be active citizens. You have a voice. Use it for good.

News from The Arts
Wow, what a busy first half of Term 4! By the time you read this, we will be into the last few weeks of term and will soon farewell the graduating Year 12 students.
I hope you were able to catch the final showcases of Year 12 work, with the Art and Film Night, Music Showcase and Dance and Drama Showcase held this week.
The school’s Presentation Night was a fabulous celebration of student success and a feast of performances, with many of the school’s instrumental music ensembles performing for the final time in 2017. Thank you to the Vocal Ensemble, Swingers, Brass Ensemble and Stage Band for your outstanding performances on the night. Congratulations go to all of the Arts award winners, including the Years 11 and 12 subject award winners, the gold and silver cultural award winners, as well as our major award winners, Lauren Hooper and Katie Lee Spresser for Senior and Junior Excellence in the Arts awards.
The celebrations have continued into November, at the annual Cultural dinner. This was a fabulous evening of reminiscing on and remembering all of the 2017 events and activities, celebrating with the graduating class of 2017, as well as making some announcements for the 2018 school year.

We were absolutely blown away by all of the applications – both by the number and the quality of the applicants.
The announcement of the 2018 school musical was met with great enthusiasm and excitement; in 2018 Centenary State High School will present… The Addams Family. Make sure you plan nothing for August, you won’t want to miss this show! In November, the Performance Plus classes in Years 8 and 9 will also present their production to both the school and community audiences, and in 2018 that show will be… Beauty and the Beast.
The most significant award presented at the Cultural Dinner is the Dale Partridge Shield, for the Spirit of the Arts award. This award, named after the founding Arts Head of Department, is an award that recognises a student for what they’ve contributed and offered the Arts department during their time at Centenary State High School. It’s an award for recognising that there are students who are completely dedicated to the Arts faculty in many ways – through their participation, their dedication, their attitude, their effort – this is an award for the student who truly embodies the spirit of the Arts program. The winner of this award in 2017 is Mark Blakey. Congratulations and thank you, Mark, for what you have contributed to the Arts here at Centenary State High School. We will certainly miss you next year!
Students in Year 6 have now completed their auditions for the Music Plus and Performance Plus classes in 2018 and have been notified regarding the outcome of their audition. With the reputation of these programs in the community, it was no surprise that the demand far exceeded the number of positions available. Thank you to all the students who auditioned and we look forward to working with you in 2018.
The next major event in the Arts faculty is the Performance Plus production. This year it’s a 2-for-1 Disney spectacular! The Years 8 and 9 classes are performing Alice in Wonderland, while the Year 10 class is performing High School Musical. The tickets are on sale now at the office.
Student Success
This fortnight we celebrate three of our students who have been busy in the pursuit of excellence in the Arts outside of school.
Year 10 student Lara McGahan has been cast in the Little Mermaid, performing with the Ballet Theatre of Queensland in January 2018 at QPAC. Lara has been cast as one of Ariel’s sisters, one of the evil ‘polypi’ and a Moldavian dancer in a number of performances in January. Congratulations Lara, we look forward to watching your performances in the New Year!
Year 9 student Zac Alkhousi recently performed in the Australian National Irish Dancing Championship, where he placed 5th in the solo section for boys in his age group. This is a very tough competition and Zac performed a PB to finish 5th. In a lead role in the 16 dancer figure, Zac’s group finished 3rd and he also finished 4th in the choreographed section. Well done Zac, we look forward to seeing some of your Irish dancing soon!
Year 12 student Nuufou Sakaria, as you may remember, was awarded a scholarship to attend the Youth Theatre Residency Week over the September holidays, run by the Queensland Theatre Company. She impressed so much during the residency that she was selected to join a new project as part of the Youth Artist Company Ensemble in ‘The Monologue Project’. Usually students would be required to audition for the ensemble, but Nuufou was selected and has bypassed the audition process!

Year 12 Report
Formal, Mystery Tour, Graduation - three events that Year 12s look forward to from the moment they step into Senior. These events are coming up incredibly quickly for all of us, and information has recently been sent out regarding the Formal and Mystery Tour. Payments and all consent forms have been finalised for these events. I look forward to seeing you all at Hillstone, St Lucia before the Formal commences!
By now, everyone – parents/carers, students and teachers alike – are on a countdown to the end of their high school years. Some are counting with joy and expectation, and some are counting with trepidation. When speaking with many of our students over the last few weeks, I’ve realised they are incredibly full of mixed emotions about leaving Centenary SHS. English Communication students have used their class time to reflect on their time, and have reflected on how much they’ve changed, what they’ve loved, their regrets, and who they need to thank for helping them in their final assessment, Valedictorian Speech.
As a cohort we had our final Whole School Assembly where school leaders presented past reflections and future advice to the junior cohorts, and where Jarryd Matthews presented his Valedictorian Speech. We also had our last curriculum classes and ‘Celebration Day’ of Year 12 on Friday, November 3. Many last moments of secondary school events for our students, and new beginnings to look forward to.
On a personal note, I would just like to also say thank you for all the support I’ve received from parents/carers over the last three years. The emotional support (and last-minute nagging!) you’ve provided for your young ones may have been taxing, but I’m sure we will agree on Graduation Day that both they and we have all come a long way. It’s been wonderful working with you all and I am thankful to have been a part of your and your student’s life.
This has been an incredible adventure, with some amazing experiences, and it’s been an honour to serve them. They are incredibly talented, passionate and intelligent. I will miss them.
Thank you.

Year 10 Report – “Gen10 of Centen”
Presentation Evening
Firstly I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to recipients of the Gold, Silver and Bronze Academic Awards. These awards are presented to students who have received outstanding achievements. It was very impressive to see so many Year 10s receiving awards on Presentation Evening (Gold and Silver) and Year 10 Assembly (Bronze). I would also like to congratulate our Year 10 major award recipients from the night:
- Jake Knight – Junior Sportsperson of the Year
- Miranda Callum – Australian Defence Forces Long Tan Leadership Award
- Ishaann Cheema – BYTE Technology Excellence Award
- Ella Loney – USQ Year 10 Excellence Award for Junior Dux
It was a spectacular night and I was pleased to share and celebrate this special occasion with students and parents/carers.

Year 8 Report
The start of Term 4 has been incredibly busy for our Year 8 cohort, with leadership roles for 2018 at the forefront of our priorities. At the end of Term 3, 15 shortlisted students presented speeches on a year-level assembly to 260 fellow Year 8s in the hope to become next year’s Junior School Captains. The quality of these speeches was astounding, and I found it difficult to believe that these talented young people are only in Year 8. After presenting their speeches, our shortlisted applicants were interviewed by Angela McKay (HOD Junior Secondary), Karyn Abraham (Year 7 Co-ordinator) and myself. The calibre of these candidates made the selection process challenging, but after much deliberation, we agreed on 4 successful students. At our annual Presentation Night, it was my great pleasure to watch our 2018 Junior School Captains: Zac Ashton-Norton and Nam Chi Dang, and Vice-Captains: Byron Roger and Annika Melkersson, announced to the school community. Congratulations! I am certain you will make us proud next year.
An abundance of academic, cultural, sporting and community success amongst our Year 8 cohort was also celebrated at Presentation Night. There are some exceptionally capable students within the group and I look forward to witnessing further success as they progress through their schooling years.
With less than 5 weeks of school left for the year, it is vital that we keep the young people in our school community positively engaged with both social and learning experiences. If you have any concerns regarding the progress of your child, please get in touch.

News from our P&C
October has been a busy month for the P&C. It started with the Trivia Night on October 6, which was once again a successful night, raising approximately $4100 for our Student Support Fund.
We have received feedback from several attendees saying how much they enjoyed it. This could not have happened without the efforts of a committed team, led by Sarah Towner. We would like to thank them all, and of course everyone who attended. In addition, the Arts Subcommittee ran the canteen over the weekend of the Brisbane Bands Festival. This is one of the subcommittee’s major fund raisers for the year and the proceeds will go toward another classroom piano. Finally, uniform try-ons were held two afternoons after school and on a Saturday morning. All were busy, however, so far less than half of the 2018 Year 7 students have purchased uniforms. This means long queues in January (there was a 3 hour wait at times last January). If you have a student starting next year, or know someone who has one, please think about organising uniforms this year. The uniform shop is open Monday to Wednesday from 8am to 11am.
