The Retrospective
As the 2018 school year nears its end, it is timely to reflect upon the successes and challenges of the last 12 months. Centenary SHS has been committed to a very real improvement agenda with the priority of improving the quality of learning and schooling experience for each and every student in the school. Significant milestones include:
- Continued good Year 12 outcome data with a prediction of 100% QCE attainment and approximately 74% OP 1-15.
- Continued strong NAPLAN numeracy outcomes - in particular 36.8% of Year 7s achieving in the Upper Two Band
- A successful implementation of the co teaching program as part of our Inclusive Practices
- A successful BOYD program in Year 7 with 100% device use
- A promising implementation of the Write that Essay program
- A strong Athletics performance with record school participation in In-school, District, Regional and State Carnivals
- Our Year 10 Boys Basketball team making it to the Metro Finals
- Two outstanding productions in Addams Family and Beauty and the Beast
- Vocal Ensemble again making to the National Finals of the A Capella championships
- A strong Kokoda Challenge performance finishing in 2nd place.
- Our inaugural Alumni Concert
- 2008 Graduate Grant Irvine winning a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal
I take this opportunity to thank all members of the Centenary SHS community for their support throughout the year. I also wish to acknowledge the contributions of parents who have directly involved themselves in the life of the school – whether it be volunteering in the canteen, participating in the P & C, transporting students to events, supporting the Arts program or a sporting team … thank you – our school is stronger for your efforts.
Graduating Year 12 Cohort
The signature events for the Year 12 Cohort held in their last week of school formed a fitting tribute to the group. One of the pleasures of teaching is to witness the growth and maturing of students across their secondary education. A stand out feature of the 2018 graduates was their ability to have fun but respect their school and others at the same time. We wish them well for life post Centenary SHS.
Staffing
On behalf of the Centenary Community I thank our departing staff for their contributions to our school.

2019 Plans
We are currently working on our 2018 strategic plans with Curriculum Delivery with a focus on Moderation and Differentiation, Writing for Learning, Teaching for Thinking and eLearning having been identified as whole school priorities. These areas will receive significant focus and resourcing as we endeavour to improve student learning in 2019.
In respect to eLearning we are rolling our digital textbooks in Years 7, 8 and 11 next year. All students in these year levels will be required to use a digital device for their learning. More information is available on the school’s website.
Next year’s Year 11 Cohort will commence Senior Studies in the new system of Senior School curriculum and assessment. We have been working closely with local secondary schools to ensure we deliver a strong program.
On behalf of the Centenary SHS staff - may you and your family enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday.

Semester 2 Reports
All Semester 2 report cards are now being completed and final checking is taking place. Report cards are scheduled to be e-mailed by the end of Week 10. It is important that all contact details are correct, especially your e-mail address, so that you receive this valuable feedback about your son/daughter’s progress. Please contact the office staff to update any details that may have changed.
Year 9 Moving Up Assembly
On Monday 3/12/18, the Year 9 students participated in the annual ‘Moving Up Ceremony’. This graduation ceremony recognises the transition from the Junior School into the senior phase of learning. All students received a Junior Certificate of Education based on their academic achievement over the course of study on Year 9. Merit Certificates were also presented to those students who had consistently received A and B standard results for behaviour and effort throughout Year 9.
Christmas Holidays
With the year coming to an end, it is a good time to reflect on your highlights and lowlights of the past year. Upon reflection you can then set yourself new targets and ambitions for next year. Once you have done this, please take the time to relax and enjoy your holiday break and come back to school in 2019 refreshed and fully charged.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL FAREWELL
It is almost 12 years since I was appointed to Centenary SHS, as an Acting Deputy Principal, in April 2007. Since then I have worked with thousands of students and seen 12 cohorts of students graduate from our school. It is now time for me to leave my teaching career, a career that has all of us give much to others, but as teachers know, we have the great pleasure of working with young people, and their families, to help shape their futures.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and my work here at Centenary – it is a great school within a great community.
The Deputy Principal role has so many aspects that I have never had a dull day! From timetabling, to work with teachers, to investigating behaviour, to attending P&C meetings, school camps and Arts performances, to chats with parents about their concerns and to students who are upset, it has all been very engaging – and sometimes needed the wisdom of Solomon!
Together with other staff members we successfully brought brand new Year 7s to high school four years ago with the Flying Start initiative, and already this group are our Year 10s going into Year 11 and the new Senior Education phase. Time moves fast in schools.
Thanks to you all for your assistance, your support, the many laughs and many kindnesses over these years. I wish you all well.

Clearance Forms
This checklist has been given to all students. This is a process that ensures all books and equipment are returned to the Resource Centre before the end of the year. All outstanding fees should be finalised and absentee notes handed into the office. Each section is to be completed and signed by the appropriate officer then returned to the office on completion.
2019 student absences Term 1
Just a reminder that if your student is going to be absent during the first week back, please fill out the 2019 Student Absence Form. This form can also be found on the front page of the school website in the Quicklinks tab.
Student Resource Scheme
A Student Resource Scheme 2019 Agreement Form was issued to students with Clearance Forms. This form can also be downloaded from our website.
Parents/Carers are asked to complete the agreement by ticking “YES” and signing this form as an indication of their continued participation in the scheme. The fee covers the cost of resources outside of textbooks.
Parents/Carers who do not wish to participate in this scheme must complete the agreement form by ticking “NO” on this form. Parents/Carers who do not wish to participate in this scheme should make arrangements with the class teachers to obtain a list of materials and resources which will be necessary to complete the work of that particular class. Notification in writing should also be given to the Business Manager so that accounts can be adjusted. If not participating in the scheme, each student is required to:
- Pay a fee to offset the cost of those resources and services related to your child’s education other than textbooks
- Supply their own copy of required individual novels, dictionaries, atlases, etc.
- Supply their own copy of textbooks used within classes as class sets
- Supply their own resources where practicable
- Obtain a list of all materials and resources from their class teacher

STUDENT LEADERSHIP COORDINATOR
News from the Student Leadership Coordinator
This term, we celebrated the success of our 2018 Year 12 leaders. Their dedication, drive, passion and enthusiasm has been instrumental to the overall success of the Leadership Forum this year. Our two school captains, Josh and Nina, received some major awards at this years’ Presentation Night and they were so deserving of these prestigious honours, and I am so very proud of them. We also awarded the annual ‘Golden Toaster’ award – an award going to the forum member who has shown dedication and true leadership qualities. The winner of this prestigious award went to one of our Year 9 leaders, Nam-Chi Dang. Congratulations, Nam-Chi!
This will be my final year as the Student Leadership Coordinator. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with these amazing young people, with our primary goal to make Centenary State High School an exciting place to be. I look forward to my next adventure – being the Year 8 Year Level Coordinator next year with the goal to carry the cohort through until they graduate in 2023.
For the leaders of 2019 – best of luck for next year. I know that you will succeed in every initiative you set yourselves and I will enjoy watching you work together with your new coordinator.

INTERNATIONAL
On Thursday, 29th November, Centenary SHS International Students became the first school in Qld to participate in the EQI swimming proficiency. 25 students worked with Qld Surf Lifesaving who assessed their ability to float, thread water and swim short distances. The students were willing participants, keen to help one another and shout encouragement. The benefits of this program were not just limited to us assessing the swimming proficiency of our students in relation to water activities but I believe it also provided valuable feedback to our students who may now reconsider their perceived swimming ability, and may approach water activities in a more conservative and responsible manner.

CHAPLAIN
News from the Chaplain
A message from Chappy Bernie
Merry Christmas,
It has been an honour to be part of these young people lives, walking with them in the highs and lows of their school journey. It has been a Privilege to work with the most professional team of people in this education environment. Each sharing, providing guidance to each of the students.
I have been reflecting on the year past and looking with excitement on the new incoming year. There have been many wonderful events that I am proud to be part of at Centenary State High School. I have enjoyed the challenge at Centenary, I have enjoyed working with all year levels.
I have discovered there are many different people who go that little bit further to help the students at this school. This is showing by the Senior Leadership team who guide the ship, to the fantastic, caring and supportive teachers. There also the great Student Support staff, all the grounds men, cleaners and Admin staff, whose work is to provide a good caring supportive environment for the student and parents of Centenary State High School.
At this time of Christmas, I hope everybody will relax and enjoy the festive season. We are all allowed to relax and share the celebration with the ones we love. I take this opportunity to wish all the Centenary State High School community a Very Holy Christmas and a safe Happy New Year. I am looking forward to an exciting year in 2019.

SPORTS DIRECTOR
Sports Director Report
We are now drawing to a close after a very successful sporting year in 2018. We have an extremely busy start to the year in 2019 and I would like to ensure that parents are aware of important sporting dates.
I understand that students specialise in sports and would like to attend District/Regional/State trials so I want to ensure that no one misses trialling for their sport. If your student would like to trial for any of the sports listed below in the calendar they must follow the following procedures:
- Listen to the notices and constantly check the HPE noticeboard for trial notices
- See Mrs Nasalio in Staffroom 4 and attend a trial at school.
- If successful at the school trial the student will be given a permission form and information letter about the District Trial.
- Bring the forms back to Mrs Nasalio signed to receive the school stamp and to be nominated.
- You will only be nominated to attend the trial once Mrs Nasalio has nominated you and stamped the paperwork.
Cross Country 2019
The School Cross Country will be held in Week 6 on Wednesday 6th March during periods 3 and 4. All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will participate in either the Championship Race or the Fun Run.
Students in years 10, 11 and 12 that would like to participate for house points and for a positon on the school team to attend District Trials must nominate. Nominations are occurring in Week 4 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. If a student does not nominate they go to normal classes.
Students that finish in the top 6 will receive forms to represent Centenary SHS at the Northern District Trials.
Swimming Carnival 2018 and 2019
In 2018 there is a swimming carnival in Week 10 for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. The carnival is focused on students competing in four strokes and plenty of novelty events. This is a chance for the students to showcase their swimming ability and is a nice way to end the school year.
We are holding Trials for students that would like to attend the Northern District Swimming Trials and do not have a registered swim time with a club.
Swimming Time Trial Information
Date: Thursday 31
January (Week 1!!)
Venue: Jindalee Pool
Time: 7:00am – 8:30am
Please be aware that if your child is a club swimmer then they would be better to submit their club times for the events that they wish to nominate for at the District level rather than attend the school trials. The events that we are holding time trials for are;
- 50m Freestyle, Breastroke, Backstroke and Butterfly for Years 7, 11 and 12 students (Year 8, 9 and 10 students registered their swimming times in 2018 for four strokes)
- 200m Individual medley – trials only if required
- 200m freestyle (Girls) and 400m Freestyle (Boys) Open age events
Students that meet qualifying standards will then go onto compete at the Northern District Trials.
Northern District Swimming Trials 2019
The Northern District Swimming Trials will be held on Monday 11th February at St Peters Lutheran College. Students that would like to attend the District Trials must achieve a qualifying time that is set by the District. The qualifying times will be published in Week 1. Times must be verified through the school trials or through a club meet.
School trials will be held on Thursday 31st January at the Jindalee Pool from 7 – 8.30am. Students that would like to attend the time trial need to see Mrs Nasalio in Week 1 to collect permission forms.
To nominate for Trials
- Collect a nomination form from Mrs Nasalio in Staffroom 4
- Complete the nomination form
- Return it to Mrs Nasalio by 3pm Wednesday 30th January, 2019 to Staffroom 4.
Athletics 2019
Due to changes in dates at the State level the Centenary SHS will be held in Week 1 and 2 of Term 2. Nominations will be occurring in Week 7 and 8 of Term 1. This is significantly earlier so it is important that parents and students are aware of the timelines for 2019.
Centenary SHS Touch Football – CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to the U/15 Centenary SHS Girls Touch Football for winning the grand final at BMTA (Whites Hill). This is a massive achievement as this is their first time competing in this competition. The girls showed outstanding sportsmanship, commitment to training and to playing every Thursday night and the improvement in their touch football skills was amazing. The score at full time was 0 – 0 against a Southern Storm Club team. The game went into a drop off. The next team to score wins. The drop off went to 3 on 3 for 9 minutes before Centenary SHS scored the winning try. I am extremely proud of the girls.
The U/15 boys and Open boys will play in their semi-final and final on Friday 8 December. Best of luck to both teams!
Calendar
I have included a copy of the calendar for 2019 below. Please be aware that this calendar could change and it is the responsibility of the students to be listening to the notices and checking the HPE noticeboard.
Please feel free to contact me via email – tnasa1@eq.edu.au if you have any questions regarding the new sporting structure. Have a fantastic Christmas and enjoy time with your families.
See you all in 2019.

FACULTIES
APPLIED TECHNOLOGY
Senior Programmes
In preparation for next year’s introduction of the Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance Systems (SATE), teachers have been developing work programmes from selected syllabus documents. “Food and Nutrition” and “Design” are two new subjects to emerge from the revision of senior syllabi as a consequence of the introduction of SATE.
Teachers have designed the first two pieces of assessment for the respective courses and will participate in an endorsement process, late this year, to ensure that the assessment instruments satisfy Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) requirements.
The new subjects are exciting and will present challenges to both teachers and students.
The new senior assessment system will start with students entering Year 11 in 2019.
The first students to receive an ATAR instead of an OP will graduate from Year 12 in 2020.
Safety Requirements
Practical subjects, regardless of whether they operate in a kitchen or workshop, require students to satisfy basic safety expectations. Leather shoes are mandatory, yet despite this, there has been in increasing number of students who are reluctant to wear the correct footwear. Safety is paramount, therefore non-compliancy will result in the student being assigned to an adjoining room to complete theory units. Should the non-compliant practice continue, the student’s continuation in the course will be the subject matter for discussion between the parent and the school. Students who enrol in a practical class need to understand that safety is non-negotiable and attempts to ignore requirements will incur consequences.
I’m willing to discuss the issue with parents but reiterate, safety is paramount.
Australian Curriculum
The immergence of the Australian curriculum has presented junior students with a Design and Technologies syllabus. As the title implies, students are required to “design products or services to meet present or future needs”. This year, The Applied Technology staff have been writing junior work programmes to satisfy Australian curriculum requirements. Teachers are using this opportunity to review and change aspects of the junior course, however it has been our intension to maintain the practical focus of our subjects. We remain resolute in our belief that students learn best by doing.
Reports
Reports will be arriving soon. Please spend some time reviewing the results. If there is room for improvement, it is important to establish what has inhibited a greater degree of success and then decide what changes need to occur. The “subject” tends to be an easy excuse and often incorrect cause of the problem. I ask that the student’s commitment to the course requirements be considered, in addition to their general routine regarding time assigned to homework, assignment tasks, part-time work and social interests.
Congratulations to those students who are satisfied with their results and I look forward to an improvement from those who acknowledge that they are capable of producing better outcomes.
Enjoy a restful and safe summer vacation and I trust you experience memorable times with family and friends.
Michael Tobin, Applied Technology HOD

Year 11 Report
Leadership in 2019
Student leadership at Centenary is valued highly and demonstrates our valuing of democracy and responsibilities of citizenship. Year 12s are provided with the opportunity to take on a leadership role as School Captain, Year 12 Student Leader or as a member of the Year 12 Student Council.
The role and responsibilities of the School Captain is to make a positive difference for the life of the whole school community and individuals within it. They are active within the school and represent our school at external events. I am extremely pleased to announce the School Captains for 2019 are Miranda Callum and David Dau; and the Vice Captains are Chloe Hacker and Bank Chotrueng. Congratulations!
The Year 12 Student leaders have also been selected for 2019. These students will lead the Year 12 cohort in their final year of school and organise activities such as the Senior Formal, Mystery Tour and Graduation. It gives me great pleasure to announce the Year 12 Student Leaders for 2019 – Mollie Taylor and Ishaann Cheema; Samantha McKay and Daniella Swart. I am excited to be working with these students in organising Year 12 events.

And now as the school year ends, I would like to thank the Year 11 Student Leaders – Mollie, Miranda, Bank and David - for their leadership and commitment to making 2018 a memorable year for Year 11s.
Final words from Year 11 students – Mollie, Miranda, Bank and David
“Year 11 was a jam-packed year full of self-discovery highs and lows as we embark on our final years of high school. This year we had, many high-achieving students with Francesca Hellmuth selected as the member of the Mt Ommaney Youth Parliament Program. Miranda Callum and Mollie Taylor were selected to be part of the QUT future leaders program and Bank Chotrueng, Sam Muharem and Amy Parker, part of the UQ Young Scholars Program.
This was a year with plenty of growth and some of the highlight included:
- Eye-opening talks from RACQ and the fire brigades excelled our knowledge of safety to prepare us for our future.
- The Biology students had the amazing opportunities to get hands on experience on the biological field.
- The Semi-formal, a night that all Year 11 students will remember forever
Now as the year is coming to an end, and we want to give a big shout out to our awesome Year 11 HG teachers and our Fabulous Ms Furlong. Bring on Year 12!!”
I would also like to thank the Year 11 HG teachers. They are truly exceptional people who have provided incredibly supportive and guidance to the students this year. Thank you to the Year 11 HG teachers:

Thank you also to the parents/guardians of Year 11s. It has been my absolute pleasure working with you and your child this year. It only seems like yesterday that this amazing cohort began their high school experience and now we are preparing for their final year of school.
And finally, Year 11s, I look forward to continuing our journey together into your final year of high school. Have an awesome holiday, see you in 2019!

Year 9 Report
The final term of 2018 has been busy and productive for our Year 9 cohort. From the beginning of the term, we have emphasised the importance of rising up and being ready to face the challenge of senior school. I am pleased to say that the group has taken this challenge in their stride and are looking well equipped to succeed as Year 10s in 2019!
In recent years, Centenary SHS has introduced an annual Moving Up Ceremony to celebrate the transition from Junior to Senior School. This year’s ceremony was a great success, with a number of students attaining special academic awards as a result of their diligence and commitment to school. On top of academic awards, students who have consistently demonstrated excellent effort and behaviour were recognised through Merit Awards. An outstanding 82 students earned themselves Merit Awards this year! I would like to take this opportunity to recognise once more our Honours recipients, who achieved an A in all four core subjects in both Semester 1 and Term 3:
Didula Dias
Carl Gerke
Annika Melkersson
Brendan Nguyen
Jessica Tran
Congratulations to all of our Year 9s for their efforts throughout the first three years of their schooling career. I am looking forward to the next three!
Have a safe and relaxing holiday.

News from our P&C
President’s Report - P&C Meeting Wednesday 1/11/2018
This being our last general meeting for 2018 I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on the P&C’s achievements during the course of the year. I believe that we have had a good year with a number of good stories to tell.
- Air-conditioning – $40,000 donated to the school air-conditioning project in March
- Through funds received from the Community Benefit Gambling Fund (thanks to Peter Cooke for lodging the application) we were able to fund the renovation/rebuild of the long-jump pit
- We provided support for some students to attend the Year 12 formal.
- We have provided some support for students whose families were experiencing difficult times
- We again supported the school Chaplaincy service to the tune of $15,000
- With funds raised by the very dedicated Performing Arts Sub-Committee we were able to send the choir to Melbourne for the national acapella competition
- We have provided some financial assistance to students representing the school at Regional and State level
- The canteen and uniform shop, our major sources of revenue, continue to be vary capably run by Cheryl, Antionette and the team
- Through the work of Roger and more lately, Scott, we have finally put the canteen upgrade out to tender and are due to receive all quotes by 4th December and we hope to let the contract shortly after
On the downside, we still struggle to attract new members and the response from the new Year 7 parents has been quite disappointing.
Jenelle Green recently took the decision to resign from the uniform shop and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank her for her years of service.
I’d also like to thank the rest of the executive and sub-committee members for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and to wish all a very Merry Christmas and a safe return in the New Year.
I move that this report be accepted.
