News from the Principal

It is a busy time of year across our Senior Years over the next few school weeks. With the Year 12s completing the new senior assessment system for the first time we enter into new territory in our end of term calendar. A significant number of staff are statewide confirmers in their respective subject areas and they bring to the school a high degree of expertise which is providing us with confidence around our delivery in the Senior Years.

Our Year 12s are currently sitting their mock Block Exams, concluding in Week 10. The feedback here will be critical to students identifying their learning gaps leading into the External Assessment phase. The timing provides us with time to work with our students, with these gaps identified, before the final block exam period.

Our Year 11s will complete Unit 2 Assessment across Weeks 1 and 2 in Term 4. Students should have a considered approach to study by this stage of the year. They need to maintain their focus in class across the next few weeks and seek feedback on their learning to maximise their opportunity of success. Some students will change subjects at the end of this unit although the successful tracking toward QCE completion and learning success remain key considerations.

Year 10 students and caregivers have recently engaged in the SETP process as a means of informing senior pathway and subject selection. I trust that the quality dialogue with Senior Staff around individual student aptitude, achievement and aspiration will realise good decision making. Many of our Year 10s will head out in Week 10 for Work Experience. Although it has been around for many years, these work placements assist students in formulating pathway plans through the senior years into employment or further learning.

Co-Curricular

It has been a difficult year for our co-curricular delivery with the COVID-19 restrictions. It has been particularly telling in our inability to have parents/carers spectating at many of our sporting events and performances. This restriction has made parent/carer engagement challenging across the school year.

On the positive side though ... it has been great to see the Athletics Day and Senior Gala Day go ahead in recent weeks. We look forward to the Junior Gala Day in Week 10. A strong performance here will see Centenary SHS crowned as District Sports Champions for 2020.

Learning Devices 2020

One of the real successes in the school over the last 18 months had been the take-up and use of learning devices in the classroom. The use of digital textbook platforms and school developed OneNotes sit at the core of our classroom delivery.

At the beginning of Term 4, the way students connect to the school Wi-Fi will change. This requires them to connect again using a new service called Intune. Students who don’t do this will lose access to the school network until they connect using Intune. The HOD of eLearning James Whittle will be in contact with parents/carers to provide a guide to this change.

Road Safety Considerations

Please be considerate of the safety of our students as they travel to and from school. The Moolanda St roundabout continues to cause concern, with some parents/carers stopping at the school entrance. The local police are aware of this frequent infringement.

Unfortunately we had an accident involving a student on Curragundi Road earlier in the year. Please note the area adjacent to the school entry has been signed as No Stopping.

Student Success

Congratulations to our premiership winning senior teams:

  • Open Boys touch football
  • Year 10 Boys touch football
  • Year 10 Girls touch football
  • Year 10 Boys basketball
  • Year 10 Girls basketball

Enjoy your Spring Holiday

News from the Deputy Principals

Year 12 External Assessment

All Year 12 students have been busy preparing for the upcoming External Exam Block for General subjects, which starts on Monday 26 October 2020. The External Exam Block Timetable is attached below.

The introduction of external assessment in General subjects is a key feature of the new QCE system. To give school communities a sense of what external assessment will be like, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has published sample papers for all students and parents to access on its website at the link below. The sample papers can be found in the Assessment tab on each syllabus page.

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects

To assist students in preparation for the external exams, all Year 12 students will participate in a ‘Mock Exam Block’ from Wednesday 9/9/20 to Friday 18/9/20 where students will be exposed to the conditions and rigor of the external exam procedures. Students will also receive valuable feedback about their results, which they can use to hone their preparation for the ‘real’ external exam block.

Year 12 Subjects – Final Results Procedures

There have been a number of queries lately around the impact on the subject result for General subjects with the removal of one Internal Assessment.

The QCAA has developed a very informative and easy to read guide, which outlines how exit results are achieved. It is important to note that the external exams will still contribute the same percent towards the overall result. The QCAA will use scaling processes to adjust the overall contribution of the two internal assessment items towards the overall exit result. The QCAA guide can be found below.

Semester 2 Interim Reports

Term 3 Interim reports for Years 7 to 10 and Year 12 will be sent to all parents by the end of Week 1 Term 4. This report is designed to give students and parents’ feedback that reflects how students are progressing with regard to their result, effort and behaviour for their subject in Term 3.

Year 11 students will have their report sent after the completion of the Unit 2 Exam Block. The Year 11 report will give an indication to students about how they are progressing at the end of Unit 2 (the mid-point of their senior subject). Year 11 students will then enter the summative phase of Unit 3 and 4 in the New QCE System.

Year 12 students will receive a report before they enter the External Exam Block, indicating where they are positioned before the external exams. The school is scheduled to receive confirmed results for Year 12 students in Week 1 of Term 4.

Please make sure that your contact details, especially your e-mail address, is up to date so that you do not miss this important information. If any contact details have changed, can you please inform the office staff.

News from the Business Manager

2020 Fees

Thank you to the families who have paid the 2020 school fees. Your payments are greatly appreciated and go directly to enhancing the learning of your child/children.

For those families who have not yet paid, a “Debtor Statement” for school fees will be processed, and parents/carers will receive these either by email or by post shortly. This statement is an overview of previous single invoices that have already been forwarded.

Please note that no action is required for a credit adjustment, this will appear as a negative amount on a statement. If you have not received a statement this indicates that there are no outstanding fees.

All fees relating to the 2020 calendar year are due. An overview of all fees and charges can be located on our website below. These documents provide a detailed explanation (by subject) of Curriculum Charges and Student Resource Scheme fees and what the school provides for each of these charges.

http://www.centenaryshs.eq.edu.au/

Please note that some subjects are only timetabled each term or semester. For these subjects, invoices will be generated as required with an email advising parents/carers of the fee. For invoices generated after the due date, a 30 day account will operate.

For more detailed information please contact the individual Head of Department or Business Manager by emailing admin@centenaryshs.eq.edu.au.

Parent/Carer Experiencing Financial Difficulties

A parent/carer wishing to participate in the Student Resource Scheme and experiencing financial hardship is encouraged to contact the Business Manager to discuss how their financial obligations can be met throughout the school year, or to negotiate alternative arrangements that may be available to accommodate their individual circumstances. All discussions will be held in the strictest confidence.

Lost Property

Students should check the school office for any property they believe they have lost. If property is marked with the student’s name, every effort will be made to return the property to the student as soon as possible. Parents/Carers are most welcome to visit the school and check the lost property section for items that their student may have lost.

Items of school uniform which remain unclaimed after one month will be placed in the “spare uniform” collection kept at the school for emergency situations or will be sent to the school uniform shop for sale as ‘second-hand’ uniforms. Other unclaimed items will be donated to charities.

ELEARNING

Important update from eLearning

All BYOD students are required to re-connect their device using Intune

At the beginning of Term 4, the way students connect their BYOD (Bring You Own Device) to our school network will change. This requires them to connect using a new service called Intune. Intune is a secure system that allows students to use school Wi-Fi, emails, learning applications and websites on personal devices. Intune has several advantages over our current system, including a significant cost saving, and easier connection process. However, it should not noticeably change their day-to-day experience. For more information see the Intune Parents and Carers Fact Sheet.

Students who do not connect to Intune before the beginning of Term 4 will lose access to the school network, this includes student who are currently setup on the old system. So we ask that you please remind your student to complete this task ahead of time.

The process can be completed now and should take no longer than 10 minutes on a home internet connection. We have a page on the school website that has detailed video and pdf guides to connecting a BYOD with Intune.

https://centenaryshs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/bring-your-own-device/connect-your-b-y-o-d-device-from-home

It is important that students start term 4 strongly, so we are asking that the Intune connection process is completed at home before the end of the term. This will allow time to troubleshoot if there are any problems.

Thank you for your help. If you experience any issues, please contact our IT support at cshstechsupport@eq.edu.au or see the friendly IT staff in the Resource Centre.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP COORDINATOR

News from the Student Leadership Coordinator

With another term gone, the Forum is excited to showcase and highlight the initiatives that we held during this time!

Firstly, the annual Cupcake Day fundraiser! From scrumptious chocolate icing to mouth-watering Oreo flavours, this day was successful in not only elevating the participation level – with a number of students and teachers volunteering to bake for this day - but in managing to raise an amazing $1400 for RSPCA to aid in their goals of improving animal welfare! Moreover, congratulations to ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬-Sam Heffernan (Year 7) and ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬Mrs Oakes for receiving the Best Baked Student and Teacher Cupcake prizes. Thank you to every teacher, student and staff member who participated in this day; especially to Mrs Manche (our lovely, enthusiastic and organised Forum Co-ordinator), Ms Anstey (School Nurse) and the Forum!!

Coming up in Term 4 is ‘Day for Daniel,’ another important project the Forum is excited to be involved in. To raise awareness for safety and “Stranger Danger,” a free dress day – wearing the well-recognised red theme – is occurring on Monday the 26 of October. With the Forum’s enthusiasm and encouragement to get involved, we hope this day will be efficient in representing the intended purpose.

This term has been a blast in being able to introduce and be involved in initiatives to help the community and Centenary State High School! Look out Term 4!

INCLUSIVE PRACTICES

News from Inclusive Practices

It has been another eventful term here at the Inclusive Practices Unit. Our Agrifoods class has made up for the time lost for COVID and then some. Operating under the guidance of Leah Perry and Jenny Coull, the class has grown pumpkin, cabbage, corn, herbs and so much more. Not only are the students grateful to have the chance to ‘get their hands dirty’ (literally) but they can actually see the results of all their hard work, both in the ground and on the plate. But perhaps even more exciting, we have welcomed a new batch of chickens who are laying the first batch of eggs as we speak!

In other news, the STEP Dungeons and Dragons group continues to grow, with a whopping 70 students this term. Run by IP staffers Peter Claire and Matthew Thompson, as well as Warren Hawkins, the group has seen many students build new relationships and flex their creative muscles in a way that encourages teamwork and imagination. We are also thanks to the assistance of Mason Morris in Year 10, beginning to use the players’ experiences in the world to help shape what the adventure looks like to come. This includes players’ characters being put onto an Honour Roll that we can record so the students feel like they’ve made an impact on the world.

Finally, we have been working hard in the Inclusive Practices Unit to establish academic and non-academic support programs for students. These include Touch for the Year 9 boys on Thursday lunch time as well as DIAL and Before/After School Tutoring. Through these programs, we hope to help support students to make their time at Centenary State High School as rewarding as possible.

Food for Thought

Over the years I have spoken with several students, staff members and parents who have had to face the very frightening situation of being diagnosed as having a life threatening illness.

How do you think you would cope if you had to face a similar crisis?

At first you might feel bitter and even angry, but once the initial feelings of shock have passed, there is a good chance that you would discover an inner strength that you never knew existed, as well as a greatly increased awareness of what really matters in life.

You might have heard of people who have gone through this type of situation and who have actually come to a point where they have admitted that a part of them is almost glad that they went through this trial because it taught them to not take life for granted, the way they used to do.

Isn’t it a sad fact that some of us have to face the possibility of losing our lives before we actually start to appreciate the many good aspects that our lives are filled with?

Please don’t take your life for granted. Take the time to consider the blessings that your days are filled with. If there are people in your life that mean a lot to you, then let them know that and treat them well. If there are problems in your life that need fixing, make an effort to sort out those difficulties, instead of just allowing them to continue. Look after your health and treat your body wisely. Take control of the quality of your life and enjoy it to the fullest.

A message from Chappy Bernie.

Below are things you can do to cope with change:

Helpful tips on coping with change

Change is usually easier to accept if you feel confident that you can deal smoothly with new experiences. Here are some tips:

  • Anticipate change. Take steps to avoid becoming rigid and afraid of new experiences. Throughout life, keep making friends, exploring a variety of interests and activities, and accepting new challenges at work.
  • Take care of your physical and emotional health. If you’re facing a big change, take extra care to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and limit your alcohol consumption.
  • Learn some relaxation techniques. You might find it helpful to take a yoga class or listen to relaxation tapes, which are available at most bookstores and public libraries. Or set aside a few minutes each day (in the morning, at night, or on
  • your lunch hour) to visualize yourself remaining calm and happy.
  • Keep an open mind. Try not to jump to conclusions about the change you’re facing. Just because you haven’t done something before doesn’t mean you won’t like it.
  • Gather information. The most stressful thing about change may be the uncertainty it brings. To ease your anxieties learn as much as you can about what you’ll be facing. Do research on the Internet or at the library. Talk to friends and fellow service members who’ve faced the same kind of change and ask what helped them the most in dealing with it. Or read a book such as Who Moved My Cheese? (Simon & Schuster, 1998) by Spencer Johnson, which talks about different styles
  • of coping with change.

Coping with Change

  • Limit or “pace” your changes. Try not to take on a big change before you’ve adjusted to another one or a lot of smaller changes all at once. If you know that you’re already experiencing stress, if possible, try to postpone making big decisions that will bring about more change, and possibly, more stress.
  • Talk about your feelings with people who can help. Be as specific as you can about your concerns. You might say to your spouse, “I have more responsibilities at this new duty station and it’s become harder for me to make dinner every night. I’d like to hear your ideas on what we can do about this.”
  • Consider joining a support group. If a change feels too big to handle alone, consider joining a support group for people who are going through a similar experience. You might join a group for stepparents, newcomers to a community, or people who have begun caring for an older adult with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s? disease. Check with your installation family support or community service centre for support activities. You can find groups listed in the weekly calendar in community newspapers or by searching the Internet for a national organization devoted to the issue that concerns you.
  • Consider seeing a professional counsellor. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even strong people need support and guidance when faced with tough circumstances.
  • Hold onto your sense of humour. When you’re feeling stressed, rent a video or DVD of your favourite comedy or go out to lunch with a friend who always makes you laugh. Or write about your experiences in a journal. Even if you have trouble finding the humour in your situation right away, you’ll be able to see it when you re-read your journal later on, which may help you cope with future changes more smoothly.

Interhouse Lunchtime Sporting Competition

Interhouse lunchtime competitions have commenced for dodgeball. The House Captains have been doing a wonderful job coordinating these competitions and motivating the students. It is fantastic to see the House Captains taking on a leadership role and also to see so many students competing and playing sport during the break times.

Student Success Story

Five students from Centenary SHS have been selected to represent Brisbane Cobras and 1 student was selected to represent South West Swans at the upcoming National Youth Championship for Touch Football. The NYC will be held on the Sunshine Coast in the school holidays.

Congratulations Kealan Chadburn, Rico Ngatai, Jacob Richter, Aaliyah Taylor, Isabella Nasalio and Teelah Lole. This is a huge achievement and one that deserves to be recognised. It is through hard work, persistence and dedication to the game of Touch Football that sees these young students competing at this level.

The majority of the Met West calendar has been cancelled for 2020 due to COVID-19 but fortunately, for Grace Franklin, the 16-19 years girls Netball State Championships was able to proceed. Grace was successful in selection and was given this amazing opportunity. She is a very talented netball player that is committed and driven to achieving success in her chosen sport. Grace and the Met West team finished 4th at the State Championship. Congratulations Grace!

SEQ Futsal Tournament

A number of months ago Centenary entered an U16 girls’ futsal team into the SEQ School Futsal Titles. The following students represented Centenary - Leah Siertsema, Charly Phillips, Maddy Phillips, Sophia Hook, Jessica Ebzery, Madalyn Marshall, Anae Mu and Kayla Eustace. The team placed runners up in this competition and qualified for the next stage of the SEQ futsal knockout tournament held on the 17 August. In this tournament, these young women did an excellent job and advanced into the Top 8. In the Top 8 the Centenary U16 Girls played their best but conceded defeat to a strong Mansfield SHS outfit. However, by placing in the Top 8 in the knockout competition the team automatically qualified for the next stage - 2020 Southern Queensland Champions of Champions. Congratulations to the competing students.

Met Finals

Well done to the four teams from Centenary SHS that qualified for the Met finals for this year’s winter season. This included Open Boys basketball, Year 10 Boys basketball, Year 10 girls’ volleyball and Year 9 girls’ netball. In round one, all teams competed against the bayside district in very challenging and tough games. However, only the Year 9 netball girls were successful to proceed to round two, where they went down in a close match to Northside Christian College.

Thank you to all Mr Haines, Mr Redman and Ms Tesch for coaching their respective Met Finals teams.

Gala Day

Seniors:

Congratulations to all our competing students at Senior Gala day on the 20 August, it was a very competitive and successful day from all of our teams. Students gave their all and as a school, we can be very proud of all participants for their efforts, skills and fair play. In terms of results, the best performed teams were:

Premierships winners:

  • Open Boys Touch football
  • Year 10 Boys Touch football
  • Year 10 Girls Touch Football
  • Year 10 Boys Basketball
  • Year 10 Girls Basketball

With a number of teams going down in a tight final to finish as runners up:

  • Open Girls Touch football
  • Open Girls Basketball
  • •Year 10 Girls volleyball

The West Brisbane Schools consist of Kenmore SHS, Indooroopilly SHS, Corinda SHS, Yeronga SHS and QASMT, of these schools the West Brisbane Champion School (WBCS) is decided. This year the winning school will be calculated from just two carnivals – the Senior Gala day and the upcoming Junior Gala day. The school with the highest amount of points after both these carnivals will decide the overall champion. Centenary SHS currently sits in first place 26 points clear of second place. Good luck to all Junior Gala day teams to see if we can bring home WBCS

Juniors:

The Junior Gala day is not too far away on Monday 14 September (Week 10). Students who have made the team will need to return their permission forms to their coach and pay at the office.

Lastly, thank you to all the coaches who have been so committed and enthusiastic to provide our students with the best opportunity possible to excel at the Gala days!

Athletics

The school Athletics Carnival was held in recent weeks across two highly competitive days of competition. Close to 300 students nominated to compete in track and field disciplines from Discus to the 1500m. Both days were a huge success with some outstanding individual performances and terrific house spirit. Furthermore, a massive 20 school records were broken as JARUP was crowned Athletics champions for 2020.

Training

Training has been extremely successful in developing many students’ performance. Our group of elite coaches as well as school staff have been working with students since last term (up to four sessions/week) and those who have been attending training regularly have shown massive improvements. Training will continue towards All Schools.

The level of training on offer from our coaches is unsurpassed in our district.

Queensland Athletics All Schools

Whilst the traditional representative pathways for Athletics has been cancelled for 2020, Queensland Athletics will be conducting an ‘All Schools’ event during October. This will give students an opportunity to compete for their school in a high level competition. The standard of this will that of a regional/state level event. Further details will be available when they come to hand.

Richard Haines
Athletics Co-ordinator

QLD All Schools Touch Football Championship

All four teams are training for the QLD All Schools that will be held in Week 1 of Term 4. This Touch Football Championship is the largest school event with just under 500 schools competing. 2020 was scheduled to be the World All Schools but due to COVID-19 it is now only for schools across QLD. Students have been very committed to attending training sessions before school. It is fantastic to see that there are still a few events on the sporting calendar. A full update with photos will be provided in the newsletter in Term 4.

Sports Awards

The sports awards for 2020 will be announced in Term 4. Students that have achieved at a high level in sport will be recognised and awarded a sports award. Mrs Nasalio will put a list on the HPE noticeboard that contains students names and then their sporting achievement. This is the responsibility of all students to ensure that all of their achievements are listed and to see Mrs Nasalio if a sporting event is missing.

You get sporting points for the following:

  • Gala Day teams and if you won a premiership you receive more points
  • District Sporting Teams
  • School swimming, cross country and athletics teams
  • District swimming, cross country and athletics teams
  • Met West in any sport
  • Represented Centenary in an ALL Schools Event
  • Age Champion in cross country and athletics

If any students are missing an achievement they must go to Staffroom 4 to collect a gremlin form. Once they have listed their missing sporting achievements they must complete this form and hand it back and the list will be updated.

The gremlin sheet process is now open and will close on Friday 20 September. Once again it is the student’s responsibility to make sure their achievements are accurate!

FACULTIES

ENGLISH

Our Year 10 students are at an important phase in their education, making decisions about their senior subjects through the SET planning process which has been conducted in recent weeks. The decision in English is whether to enrol in one of the three General English subjects (English, Literature or English as an Additional Language) or the Applied subject (Essential English) for Years 11 and 12. Students need to ensure that they select the strand of English in which they believe they will experience success. Students also need to be aware that, in each of these subjects, they will be required to complete at least one speaking task per year. Tasks of this kind are also completed in Years 7 – 10 so, by Senior, all students should be comfortable in giving speaking presentations. Spoken communication is a twenty-first century skill that our young people need to master, so they can go out into the world with confidence and successfully interact in many different contexts; such as job interviews and dealing with customers or clients.

With this in mind, our Year 12 English students recently completed their final speaking task. The Year 12 teaching team was inspired by the range of topics and the passion shown by these wonderful young adults in their presentations.

For the first time, in 2021, we will be offering English and Literature Extension as an additional English subject. Students will study Extension offline in Units 3 & 4 only. While there might be some adjustment made to their timetable to accommodate Extension, they must continue to study their current English subject. English and Literature Extension is incompatible with English as an Additional Language and Essential English. Further details about this extension subject will be available soon.

Sadly, in this strange COVID year, public speaking has been at a standstill and our students have missed many opportunities to develop their public speaking skills in a competitive context. We are fortunate, though, that the English Speaking Union public speaking competition is going to proceed. I want to thank Miss Long for organising, coaching and supporting ten very enthusiastic students (five in the Junior competition and five in Intermediate) who are preparing to participate in this competition. Historically, Centenary SHS has performed very strongly in this competition, and I wish our 2020 contestants the very best of luck.

We are only a few weeks away from the very first External Assessment period. Our Year 12 students have been working hard to prepare for these exams and I am confident they will do themselves and our school proud. I have every confidence in our wonderful young people as they move towards this final phase of assessment.

THE ARTS

Please enjoy the news from the Arts faculty as we come to the end of a busy Term 3!

Student Success

Congratulations to Cooper Le Brocq and best wishes for the upcoming holidays, as Cooper has been selected following a successful audition to participate in the Australian Honours Ensemble Program. This program is open to musicians nation-wide and is highly competitive. Cooper now gets to attend the masterclasses and workshops with a team of eminent internationally recognised conductors from the Conservatorium of Music and work in an intensive environment of musical excellence. Many students over the years have successfully participated in the State Honours Ensemble Program, but this is a step up, for more advanced musicians, and also attracts national music students, as opposed to Queensland music students. Well done Cooper, we are so proud of you!

Four Year 12 Visual Art students have had their work selected to represent the school at this year’s Creative Generation regional exhibition. All their works have displayed a very high degree of both technical skills and originality in concept and design. Student work that is shortlisted in the virtual regional exhibition will be displayed at the Gallery of Modern Art in 2021. Congratulations Alisha Vo, Patricia Law, Isabel Lorvi Norris and Anh Nguyen. Good luck girls!

Two Year 12 arts students have submitted one of their original music compositions to the QUT Vermilion High project. The prize was an opportunity to have their song professionally recorded, mixed and released. Congratulations to Jayden Hobbs and Lachlan Pearson – their song ‘In Awe’ will be produced by the record label over the school holidays! We can’t wait to hear it!

Representing Centenary in Visual Art, Grethe Gloy in Year 10 was one of 40 finalists in the Holmes Junior Prize for Realistic Australian Bird Art. This year had the biggest number of entries recorded yet, with a total of 416 entries, so to be in top 40 is an amazing achievement! Congratulations Grethe!

The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday 14 September through until Sunday 11 October, 10am – 2pm daily. The forty finalists will be displayed in the Theatrette at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Sunshine Coast.

Classroom News

Alex Greaves, a Centenary Vice-Captain in 2014, has established himself as a sought-after director of music videos and commercials. Alex was kind enough to visit our Year 12 Film, Television & New Media students on August 18. He shared examples of his work - with clients including Isaiah Firebrace, Keelan Mak, Kota Banks and Converse - and discussed the lifestyle of a busy freelance filmmaker. A huge thanks goes to Alex for taking the time to visit us, for inspiring our students and for sharing your invaluable insights into the film industry.

YEAR LEVEL COORDINATORS

Year 12 Report

Things are moving very quickly for our Year 12 cohort! Our end-of-year events are shaping up nicely despite the restrictions that we are all facing at the moment.

THE FORMAL

Our Formal is still set for Wednesday, November 18 at Hillstone, St Lucia. Arrivals start at 6pm for a 7pm start.

We are fortunate that Hillstone's "COVID-safe plan" allows for 250 guests - enough for our entire cohort and the required staff supervisors. Unfortunately, at this stage, it is unlikely that family and friends will be able to attend our traditional pre-event gathering.

The Formal will cost around $110 per student. Parent information letters and payment details will be sent to you at the start of Term 4.

THE MYSTERY TOUR

This is a Centenary tradition wherein, after the Formal, students change into comfortable clothes, hop onto buses at midnight and spend the next 8-9 hours enjoying a variety of fun activities at a range of secret venues. We return to school at around 9:30am.

The venues have been booked and deposits have been paid. All venues and activities are compliant with the current COVID restrictions. We are ready to go!

The Mystery Tour will cost around $135 per student. Parent information letters and payment details will be sent to you at the start of Term 4.

GRADUATION

The Graduation Ceremony is currently set for the morning of Friday, November 20 at 9am. COVID restrictions have impacted on the planning for the event, unsurprisingly, but we are determined to give our students (and their families) the send-off they deserve after this trying year. Details of the event will be announced very soon.

THE SLEEP OUT

In relative terms, 2020 hasn’t been a particularly fun year, so it was great to see almost one hundred of our Year 12 students enjoy an all-too-rare social event on August 13. The Year 12 Sleep Out was a HUGE success! A fundraiser for Mission Australia organised by the Year 12 Council, the event raised $900 for homeless Australians. Just as importantly, it was a great social outing for a cohort whose final year of school has been ... well, not quite what they expected it to be! It was a night of basketball, dodgeball, board games, card games, movies, trivia, talking and good vibes.

ALSO…

I will continue to be the Acting Year 12 Coordinator for the time being, as Debra Mansini’s tenure as Head of Department (Humanities) has been extended. Thanks as always for your support, and please contact me if you have any issues or would just like to have a chat.

Year 10 Report

First of all, I wanted to say thank you on behalf of the Year 10 team for your support of the SET Plan process in Week 7. It was great to see the high level of commitment and maturity that was demonstrated by our Year 10’s in the interviews and the weeks leading up to it. It was also great to be able to see you face to face.

Week 10 sees a number of students undertaking work experience. Ms Raven and myself have been overwhelmed by the dedication the students have shown in seeking out their own placements. This is a great opportunity for those students to develop their work readiness skills. I’m sure that the students will represent themselves and Centenary SHS proudly in their various work experience placements.

The Community Projects that the Year 10’s have been working on this term during STEP are coming to a close in Week 10. The students have done an amazing job working on various projects that have been designed to help our school community. The projects have varied from collecting items to donate to community members in need to designing an activity book for HeartKids Australia. These projects will be finalised by the students who were unable to find a work experience placement due to COVID-19 restrictions in Week 10.

Camp is going ahead! Due to the large number of students and parents who expressed interest in attending camp in Week 9 of Term 4, we have been able to go ahead with our booking. The final cost of the camp is $240. This will need to be paid no later than Friday, 20 November. Payment plans are available, please contact the school office to arrange. By the end of Week 9 this term, students will be receiving physical copies of the necessary forms. These forms will consist of the activity consent and medical forms. I will also be emailing the forms out to parents/guardians. These forms need to be completed and handed in to the student counter at the front office. More details will be emailed out with the forms.

For any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me on kgeor38@eq.edu.au.

P&C

News from our P&C

P&C September News

What a lovely morning was had by all at the Grand Opening of the new Senior Learning building. The Jazz ensemble showcased their amazing talent. Congratulations to the school on all the hard work to bring this amazing structure to life. This will be an amazing space for the senior students to learn and grow in the future years in world class facilities.

We went live! Thank you to those parents, staff and citizens who joined our P&C meeting in August from the comfort of their own home. This was a first for us being able to offer the meeting live from the Resource Centre. It was great to see so many attendees at the meeting and joining in the conversation. We will be continuing this service, therefore, should you wish to attend a meeting from home, please email us on pandc@centenaryshs.equ.edu.au and we will send you the link the day before the meeting. Next meeting details are listed below.

WE NEED YOUR HELP…

Our 2021 Year 7 uniform “try and buy” days are coming up next month. We require 6 - 8 volunteers on each day to help. We cannot do this without you! If you can volunteer on any of the below days, even if it is just for 1 hour, please let Mel know via the below uniform shop details. Due to COVID, we will be placing a few restrictions and only allowing a few people in at a time, so please be patient whilst we get out Year 6 students ready for high school in a safe environment.

If you know of any families attending Year 7 in 2021, please spread the word.

Naming of School Jackets

In an effort to reduce lost jackets and ensure students are wearing their own, we are introducing surnames being placed on the jacket done by a white laser print by a local company. This is not compulsory and your choice whether you wish to participate. The office currently has around 10 unnamed jackets in lost property and naming would aid in the return of missing jackets. Cost is an additional $10 per name. Parents have the option to place your surname on the front or the inside. Should you wish to place your surname on the outside and first name inside, you may do this for an additional $10 ($20 total).

Please drop your cleaned jacket in a bag with $10 ($20 for two printed names) with a completed form (attached), by 12 midday at the uniform shop every Tuesday. Jackets will be returned to the uniform shop on the following Monday for collection. As we will be processing in batches, please allow 4 days for naming of jackets. Naming can be lasered over the top of existing names for re-sale.

Ideally, we recommend purchasing the jackets early in the year i.e., March, before it becomes cold to allow time for them to be sent off, printed and returned. Don’t leave it till it gets cold! This is now set up and ready for anyone who would like to act now.

Please help us continue with the Entertainment Book Fundraiser with the proceeds going to the Student Welfare fund. There is still plenty of savings to gain from the Entertainment Book. All books are now digital. Should you wish to purchase a book, please visit at the link below.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 20 October at 7pm in the Resource Centre. Tea and Coffee will be available, so come and have a chat or alternatively, please log in from home!

Just a reminder, membership is free, we only meet several times a year and you are not required to be at them all, just when you can! Other than the AGM, you must be in attendance, at a general meeting for your membership to be accepted.

We look forward to seeing you all soon.
