Premier and Minister’s Visit

On Monday 25 November 2019, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Education Minister Grace Grace, visited our school to tour our fantastic new Senior Learning Building which is due to be completed at the end of this year. While at our school, they also announced major government funding for the installation of air-conditioning across a wide range of schools in South East Queensland. We will see some direct benefit of this announcement with the approval to fund the air-conditioning of a further 14 classes in our school. This will see our school reach almost 100% capacity of teaching areas now air-conditioned. This places our school in a great position to provide the best learning environment possible for all of our students. It must also be noted that the P&C Association has contributed a substantial amount of money over the last 3 years to assist with air-conditioning a significant number of classrooms. Without the support of the P&C, we would not be in the enviable position we are today.

I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful job our newly elected School Captains Amy Lightbody, Josh Ahmad, Chelsea Johnson and Dru Callaghan performed on the day. They had to meet and shake hands with a number of dignitaries and important people on the day, and they did a great job of representing our school. This was the first official function/duty for our 2020 School Captains and they are off to a great start.

First Week procedures in 2020

As per our normal processes, we will run a staggered start to the year in 2020 to allow for the induction and orientation of new year levels. Monday 27 January 2020 is the Australia Day Public Holiday and then all Year 7, 8 and 11 students are expected to be at school on Tuesday 28 January 2020 for their Orientation Programs. Year 9 and 10 students will start on Wednesday 29 January 2020.

Year 12 students will be required to attend school on Tuesday 28 January 2020 for their individual monitoring meeting with their HG teacher. All Year 12 students have received an interview time for them to attend school on this day. They will only be required to attend school, in full formal uniform, for this interview. The Year 12 interviews will be conducted in the top floor of the new Senior Learning building and will provide students with a clear understanding of how they are tracking and progressing in the new senior system. This will give students vital information and clarity as they embark on their important final year of schooling.

End of 2019

I will remain as Acting Principal until the end of the year. I have received reports that John is enjoying his travels overseas while he is on long service leave. If you have any questions, queries or concerns, please free to contact me or the relevant year level Deputy Principal. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas holiday. Take the opportunity to relax and recharge over the break and come back in 2020 ready to have your best year yet.

CHAPLAIN

News from the Chaplain

Hi I am Bernie McMullen, and I am the Chaplain of Centenary State High School. I have been a Chaplain at this school for the last ten years, and it has been a fantastic journey with many wonderful people.

It has been an honour to be part of these young people lives, walking with them in the highs and lows of their school journey. It has been a privilege to work with the most professional team of people in this education environment. Each sharing, providing guidance to each of the students.

I have been reflecting on the year past and looking with excitement on the new incoming year. There have been many wonderful events that I am proud to be part of at Centenary State High School. I have enjoyed the challenge of working with the Junior School at Centenary.

I have discovered many people go that little bit further to help the students at this school. This is showing by the Senior Leadership team who guide the ship, to the fantastic, caring and supportive teachers. There is also the great Support staff and all the grounds men and cleaners whose work is to provide a good caring supportive environment for the student and parents of Centenary State High School.

At this time of Christmas, I hope everybody will relax and enjoy the festive season. We are all allowed to relax and share the celebration with the ones we love. I take this opportunity to wish all the Centenary State High School community a Very Holy Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. I am looking forward to an exciting year in 2020.

NURSE

News from the Nurse

Please find below information from Queensland Health regarding Measles outbreak.

Important information about Measles and travel

Measles remains a concern. The Pacific region (including NZ) is affected, along with many other countries.

With the holiday travel season upon us, please make sure you are fully vaccinated against measles before travelling.

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is free through your doctor or immunisation provider for anyone born during or since 1966 who has not already had two doses. Babies travelling to affected countries can receive MMR vaccine from 6 months of age; however, they still require a dose of measles-containing vaccine at 12 months and another dose at 18 months of age.

For more information visit the Queensland Health website or call 13HEALTH.

SPORTS DIRECTOR

Sports Director Report

We are now drawing to a close after a very successful sporting year in 2019. We have had an extremely busy start to the year in 2020, and I would like to ensure that parents are aware of important sporting dates.

I understand that students specialise in sports and would like to attend District/Regional/State trials so I want to ensure that no one misses trialling for their sport. If your student would like to trial for any of District Sports then they must follow the following procedures:

  1. Listen to the notices and constantly check the HPE noticeboard for trial notices
  2. See Mrs Nasalio in staffroom 4 and attend a trial at school
  3. If successful at the school trial the student will be given a permission form and information letter about the District Trial.
  4. Bring the forms back to Mrs Nasalio signed to receive the school stamp and to be nominated.
  5. You will only be nominated to attend the trial once Mrs Nasalio has nominated you and stamped the paperwork.

Swimming Carnival 2019

Centenary State High School has now completed the swimming carnival for students in Year 7, 8 and 9. The carnival is focused on students competing in four strokes and plenty of novelty events. This is a chance for the students to showcase their swimming ability and is a nice way to end the school year.

Times from this carnival can be used in order to nominate for the Northern District Trials.

If your child missed the carnival and is not a club swimmer but would like to see if they qualify, we are holding ‘Trials’.

Swimming Time Trial Information

Date

Thursday 30 January (Week 1!)

Venue

Jindalee Pool

Time

7.00am – 8.30am

Please be aware that if your child is a club swimmer then it would be better to submit their club times for the events that they wish to nominate for at the District level, rather than attend the school trials. The events we are holding time trials for are:

  • 50m Freestyle, Breastroke, Backstroke and Butterfly for Year 7, 11 and 12 students (Year 8, 9 and 10 students registered their swimming times in 2019 for four strokes)
  • 200m Individual medley – trials only if required
  • 200m Freestyle (Girls) and 400m Freestyle (Boys) Open age events

Students that meet qualifying standards will then go onto compete at the Northern District Trials.

Northern District Swimming Trials 2020

The Northern District Swimming Trials will be held on Monday 10 February at St Peters Lutheran College. Students that would like to attend the District Trials must achieve a qualifying time that is set by the District. The qualifying times have been emailed home. Times must be verified through the school trials or through a club meet.

School trials will be held on Thursday 30 January at the Jindalee Pool from 7 – 8.30am. Students that would like to attend the time trial need to see Mrs Nasalio in Week 1 to collect permission forms.

To nominate for Trials

  1. Collect a nomination form from Mrs Nasalio in staffroom 4
  2. Complete the nomination form
  3. Return it to Mrs Nasalio by 3pm Wednesday 29 January, 2020 to staffroom 4.

I hope that everyone has a fantastic break and I look forward to supporting the students of Centenary SHS in 2020 in their sporting endeavours.

CULTURAL DIRECTOR

Cultural Director Report

We come to the end of another big school year. Again, we had a very productive and successful year in The Arts at Centenary. Thank you to all of the teachers, students and parents involved in any of our events across 2019, your contributions are highly valued and appreciated. Though the end of the year is nigh, we still have a number of events occurring, right through to the end of the term.

Cultural Dinner

The Cultural Dinner was a wonderful night of celebration looking back on the year that was in The Arts, presenting certificates, saying goodbye to the Year 12’s, and welcoming our new seniors. In particular, on the night we introduced our new Arts Captains for 2020.

Imogen Crawley
Aria Daniels
Laura Dwyer
Will Greaves
Charlotte Krstevski
Patricia Law
Cooper Le Brocq
Isabella Mould

Also during the evening was the presentation of the Head of Department Spirit of the Arts Award, given to a Year 12 student who has best exemplified the ethos and values of the arts program throughout their time at Centenary. Though the award could have gone to many very deserving recipients, none more deserved the award than Mollie Taylor. A fabulous ambassador for The Arts who will be dearly missed, we wish you every success with your future Mollie.

Conservatorium Entry

Congratulations to two of our Year 12 students, Josh Rosen and Lara McGahan, who have both been offered entry to courses at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music for 2020. Places at the conservatorium are highly sought after and very difficult to obtain, and we congratulate both of them on this wonderful achievement. All the best for your future studies.

Mulan and A Christmas Carol

The Year 8 and 9 Performance Plus classes presented their double feature show of Mulan and A Christmas Carol, Friday 29 November and Saturday 30 November in CPAC. All shows were a huge success, with plenty of stars in the making! Well done to Ms Lodder, Mr Holmes and all of the talented students involved! Special thanks also to Mrs Manche and Ms Van den Broek for assistance with the music, and Mr Johnsten and his hard working backstage crew.

Art Exhibition

Art work from Centenary students is currently on display at Mt Ommaney Library until February. Pop in to have a look at the wonderful work from some very talented students.

Film Excursion

On Thursday the 22 of November the two Year 11 FTVNM classes embarked on a trip to SAE/QANTM University. Welcomed into their world of film we participated in two workshops involving cinematography and editing. Using state of the art cameras, tripods and editing software we furthered our knowledge and understanding of film, TV and new media! And the food was great too! Thank you SAE/QANTM!

Chamber Strings

Thank you again to Mr Hoey and the Chamber Strings for adding a lovely ambience to the Year 12 formal with their music to welcome to the guests. It is a lovely event to be part of, with our musicians helping to make that special night just that little bit classier. Thank you all.

Sinnamon Village and Young Care Performance

On Thursday of Week 10, the choir will be going to Sinnamon Village and Young Care to perform Christmas music to the residents for our final performance of the year. It is a lovely way to finish the off 2019, and a great way to connect and give back to the community.

FACULTIES

APPLIED TECHNOLOGY

Senior Programs

The majority of Year 11 students have recently commenced Year 12 units of work to ensure that sufficient time is allocated to satisfy all Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance Systems (SATE), requirements. Students have been advised Year 12 assessment in “Food and Nutrition” and “Design” are summative and will be used to calculate their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

To prepare teachers for the marking of summative assessment instruments, they will participate in a trial “confirmation” process, requiring them to review the student work from partnership schools and validate the allocated mark.

Additionally, teachers are in the process of writing all three Year 12 assessment pieces to submit to the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) for endorsement. Essentially, the QCAA must approve assessment instruments before they can be administered.

Natalie Ball is in the final stages of drafting the programme for the senior Engineering course which commences in 2020.

Presentation Evening

Guests and staff assembled in CPAC prior to the Presentation Evening and were treated to some delicious finger food and refreshing drinks. The food and beverage service was provided by Home Economic students from a variety of year levels. The courteous and prompt attention to the needs of staff and dignitaries was pleasing to witness. The students’ efforts were well received, and subsequently secured them many well-deserved compliments. The students are to be congratulated on their fantastic contribution to the success of the evening.

Australian Curriculum

With senior Engineering commencing in 2020, it’s important that a preparatory subject is offered to Year 10 students. Natalie Ball, with assistance from Emelie Watson are currently formulating the course content to ensure that what’s taught in Year 10 prepares students well for senior Engineering, should students elect to enrol in the subject.

Reports

Reports will be arriving soon. Please spend some time reviewing the results. If there is room for improvement, it is important to establish what has inhibited a greater degree of success and then decide what changes need to occur. The “subject” tends to be an easy excuse and often incorrect cause of the problem. I ask that the student’s commitment to the course requirements be considered, in addition to their general routine regarding time assigned to homework, assignment tasks, part-time work and social interests.

Congratulations to those students who are satisfied with their results and I look forward to an improvement from those who acknowledge that they are capable of producing better outcomes.

Enjoy a restful and safe summer vacation and I trust you experience memorable times with family and friends.

ELEARNING

Are you ready for personalised, digital learning next year?

This year Centenary has made significant strides with eLearning, with a successful implementation of a ‘One Device per Student’ (1:1) learning environment in Year 7, 8 and 11. The recent school opinion survey was a good indication of the progress we've made. Students, parents and teachers all reported improvements in the way they access and use IT and a greater understanding of how we are using technology to improve learning. Some of the highlights from the survey included:

  • 93% of student now agree that “I am encouraged to use computers and other technologies for learning”.
  • 94% of parents agree that “I understand how computers and other technologies are used to enhance learning”
  • 94% of staff agree that “ICT is well maintained at my school”

In 2020, we will continue to build upon our progress towards wide-spread, effective and efficient use of technology in every subject. Specifically, every student will see:

  • More learning materials available anywhere and anytime via their personal device
  • Access to teacher feedback and peer collaboration online
  • Online submission of assessment from home or school
  • Further replacement bulky textbooks with eBooks
  • Increased opportunities for STEM activities including coding
  • New applications of technology across a variety of subjects.

A personal digital device for every student makes these innovations possible, so as we begin to set our sights of 2020 one if the biggest goals we've set is to expand the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scheme to include every year level and achieve one device per student in every class.

It is expected that all students have an appropriate device for use in classes as a part of the whole school BYOD approach.

To assist parents and carers taking part in BYOD for the first time, we have a wealth of information about BYOD available on our website.

https://centenaryshs.eq.edu.au/Cocurricular/Computerandinternet/Pages/Computerandinternet.aspx

When we will connect new BYOD devices to the school network?

We will connect all new BYOD devices to the school network in the first weeks of Term 1. A schedule will be shared with parents and students closer in 2020, along with preparations parents can take to make sure this process runs smoothly.

Students with existing BYOD devices will remain connected and can be used from the first day back.

Please get in touch if you have any questions about BYOD or eLearning generally.

Year 11 Report

We’ve made it to the end of Year 11! This year has flown by faster than any I can remember. Your sons and daughters will be enjoying some well-earned downtime by now.

The new SATE process really dominated the landscape this year with many changes to key procedures and processes here at school and no doubt at home as well.

Leadership

We have already presented School Captains in Amy and Josh, with Chelsea and Dru as Vice-Captains to the community. I would now like to congratulate Frankie, Joy, Imogen and Katie-Lee on their success as new Year 12 representatives to the Student Forum. The Forum, facilitated by Carly Manche in 2020, run a number of fundraisers over the year to benefit various charities. This is an important role, in particular in Year 12. As leaders, they oversee whole school student participation and will gain valuable leadership experience. A Year 12 Council election process is underway and all candidates will be informed of the outcome in due course.

2020

Year 12’s hit the ground running in 2020, with mentoring interviews planned for Tuesday 28 January 2020. These interviews for Year 12 students by HG teachers will be held over the course of the day, similar to the SET Plan process. More information will come from the HOD of Senior Schooling, Angela Raven. You may have this already.

Senior Jerseys are due to be delivered first thing in the New Year. The Year 12 Council will be selected by then and they will assist with this rollout.

In the absence of Adrian Skerritt, I have been asked to continue in the role of Acting Head of Humanities and Languages into Term 1. One of the Year 12 HG teachers Terry Oberg, himself a former Year 12 Coordinator, will act as Year Level Coordinator in my place. Adam Richter will be Year 12 Deputy Principal in 2020, but Year 11 Deputy Principal for the remainder of 2019 is Anna Petrie. (anpet0@eq.edu.au).

Please contact your student’s HG teacher, or Terry Oberg in Term 1 tober11@eq.edu.au , if you have concerns regarding the welfare of your son or daughter.

Best wishes for the upcoming festive season to you and your family.

Warm Regards

Deb Mansini, Year 11 Coordinator

Year 9 Report

Just like that, we find ourselves at the end of another year. This year was another busy one for the school and the Year 9 cohort. We saw the Junior School Captains do an amazing job leading the Junior School and representing the school with pride. Our team-building day was another success, along with our fantastic involvement in our annual High Resolves program. Both events earned the praise of the supervising companies for how connected the grade are and how socially aware the group are.

Over the last couple of weeks, the leadership team for 2020 were announced. Yet again, the cohort wowed me with their maturity and great ideas. They never make these decisions easy.

The Forum Leaders for Year 10 are: Makayla R, Cole, Kirrtanya and Matthew W.

In Year 10, we have the great opportunity to appoint a Year 10 Council. The Council assist with the running of Year 10 activities and the important event for the year, camp.

The Year 10 Council for 2020 are: Donald, Mikayla W, Aidan, Abbey, Evan, Juan, Amelia, Nathan, Ebony, Olivia and Sienna.

There is still room for any student who wishes to apply early next year.

The last Monday of this year, will see the annual ‘Going Up’ Ceremony. This ceremony is to congratulate the Year 9’s on finishing the Junior School phase of their education. The ceremony will be run by the Junior Captains, with great performances by Elenna (we will miss you), Seth, Lam and Jesse. Along with the assembly, the Year 9’s will be awarded a Junior School Certificate of Education. These certificates were awarded based on the student’s class results throughout the year.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Year 9 HG teachers who have supported me throughout the year. Thank you also to all the parents and guardians for their continuing support. I wish you all a relaxing break and look forward to seeing you all next year (in white shirts). We have a busy 2020 ahead of us.

Year 7 Report

“Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind.” – Lionel Hampton

When we genuinely show others respect and appreciation, we are meeting a basic need and helping them flourish (Fredrickson 2013). Being grateful to someone not only benefits the person, but it helps us as well. The Year 7s have implemented a wonderful tradition for our incoming Year 6s, called “Shout Out’s” brought to us by Elizabeth Pitt, one of the Year 7 Leaders for 2019. As we near the end of the year, allow me to take the opportunity express my gratefulness and give a ‘shout-out’ to the students and families of our Year 7 students.

The extraordinary contribution of our youngest students and their families to the school this year, has been felt in so many ways. From the leadership of Mercy, Ashton, Beau and Elizabeth, to the development of community that was felt across the year level, I could not begin to tell you how proud I am of the achievements of the Year 7s across 2019. I have loved being a part of your children’s learning journey at this critical juncture of their lives and thank you all for trusting me with them!

Next year, the current Year 7s will be led by Ms Elizabeth Long who will work as the Year Level Coordinator for the students for the remainder of their schooling. Have a safe and rejuvenating school holiday period, and I look forward to seeing you and your young people again next year.

Yours from the JS playground,

Research to help families of children with eczema

Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of eczema, and families struggle with managing eczema and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment.

Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with eczema. This innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child’s eczema more easily, help children cope with their eczema and emotions, prevent and manage difficult child behaviour, and reduce the impact of eczema on families.

Over the next few months, parents of 2-10 year old children with eczema in the greater Brisbane area are able to access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P free of charge as part of a research project through the University of Queensland and the Queensland Children’s Hospital. For more information, please visit us at the link below, contact Dr Amy Mitchell on (07) 3346 1202, or email healthyliving@uq.edu.au.
